Obituary For Roman Chatman

A celebration of life for Mr. Roman Chatman, 85, will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Clint Walker will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Chatman will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Roman Chatman was the fourth child born to the late Zeb Chatman and the late Bethsheba Chatman (nee Johnson) on November 7, 1934 in Alpine, Alabama.

On June 26, 1953 he was united in holy matrimony to Annie Maude Bell and to this union seven children prospered.

In 1955, Roman moved the family to Chicago, Illinois where they continued to grow with hard work and perseverance. He always wanted to be home in Alpine and finally came back in 2014 to his roots. He was a faithful member of the Deacon Board at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

For all his life, Roman was a highly spirited man who inspired everyone who knew him. He enjoyed playing card games, checkers, pool and word search puzzles with large print. Most of all he loved family gatherings and celebration.

Roman Chatman departed this life peacefully on the morning of Saturday, December 14, 2019. Two weeks prior to his death, at Thanksgiving 2019, the family celebrated his 85th birthday unknowingly witnessing his last hoorah. He had a really great time!

Preceding him in death: his loving wife, Annie Maude Chatman; a daughter, Rachel DesHotel; a grandson, Darren Chatman; brothers and sisters, Lula Dates (Charner), Oscar Chatman (Vinnie), Lonzer Chatman (Daisy), John Henry Chatman (Mattie), Ernie Chatman (Louise), Elora Chatman, Vellie Chatman and James Chatman; six brothers-in-law, Charles Bell, Julius(Cora/Claudia) Bell, James Arthur Bell, Clarence Bell, Aaron Bell, Jr. and Robert Bell; two sisters-in-law, Ella Beeman (Obadiah) and Florence Williams (Clyde Ball).

He leaves to mourn his passing a forever family. He is survived by two daughters, Dortha Latham (Lorenzo) and Gloria Seay; four sons, Donald (Emma – deceased), Robert (Beverly), Alphonso (Peggy – deceased) and Fearl Chatman (Jason Hilton); at last count and growing - eighteen grandchildren, fifty-nine great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ann Keith (Otis-deceased); a brother, Fred Chatman (Mary-deceased); special friend, Bessie Campbell; six sisters-in-law, Richard Lean Chatman, Margaret Chatman, Bertha Chatman, Lorene Bell, Pat Bell and Ruby Bell; a special cousin, Cecil Williams (Bert); a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and many more friends.
