Obituary For Mamie Elizabeth Tibbs

A celebration of life for Mrs. Mamie Elizabeth Tibbs, 83, will be 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend John L. Ragland, Jr. is the pastor. Reverend Eric Richardson will deliver the eulogy. Mrs. Tibbs will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Mamie E. Wright-Tibbs was born to the late Perdis Wright and Jennie Mae Garrett in Wadley, Alabama on April 26, 1936. Mrs. Tibbs accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wadley, Alabama. Her family moved to the Mardisville area. After moving to the Mardisville area and settling on Banjo Hill, Mrs. Tibbs decided it was time to spread her wings.

Mrs. Tibbs moved to New York in the 60’s, and later to Boston Massachusetts, where she met and married Frederick Tibbs. In Boston she worked in the textile district making curtains. Later, she worked for the Urban Community as a Homemaker before moving back to Talladega, Alabama in 1994. After moving back, she continued working as a homemaker and united with Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church where she served as President of the Nurses Guild.

Mrs. Tibbs departed this walk of life on Sunday, December 15, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Perdis Wright and Mrs. Jennie M. Garrett-Staples, three brothers, Curtis Wright, Veneleophus Wright and Javan Staples; and three husbands, Abraham Funderburg, Frederick Tibbs and Willie J. Burt.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Brenda J. Coleman (Elias) of Talladega, Alabama; one grandson, Demetrius R. Wright (Nancy) of Danbury, CT; one great-grandson, Derek James Heaton-Wright of Springhill, FL; one great-great-grandson, Derek, Jr., Springhill, FL; one sister, Rosie E. Curry, Talladega, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
