Celebration of Life for MR. JOHN JAMES EDMONDS, SR

INTERMENT: West View-East Cemetery, Halifax Street, South Hill, VA

Mr. John James Edmonds, Sr., son of the late Pauline Johnson Edmonds and the late Frank Edmonds, was born March 1, 1943 in Lunenburg County, VA and departed this life suddenly December 27, 2019 in VCU-Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA.

At an early age he was baptized at Little Mount Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA. He was a graduated of Lunenburg County Public Schools.

On October 3, 1964 he was married to Ethel Mae Sturdivant and to this union two children were born.

They moved to Washington, DC where he was employed by Peoples Drug Store for many years. After a while they moved to Baltimore, MD where he was employed by Davidson Trucking Company. John left there and began working for the City of Baltimore by driving the city bus until his retirement.

John was a member of Southern Baptist Church where he was an Usher, sang with the Male Chorus, and drove the church bus for the Senior Citizens. He loved his church and worked in any capacity that was needed. In 2017 they moved back to Virginia and he attended Temple Gate RZUA Church.

In his spare time John enjoyed driving and gardening. His favorite sayings were: “All Is Well,” “It is what it is,” and “Holding On.”

John leaves to mourn his devoted wife, Ethel Mae Sturdivant Edmonds of the home; two children- Tynette Edmonds (Lamont), Philadelphia, PA and John Edmonds, Jr. (Tonya), Baltimore, MD; three grandchildren- John III, Jonnae A. Edmonds, and Tyree Royster: one great-grandchild- Jhene Edmonds; one brother- Russell (Lily) Edmonds, Washington, DC; one sister- Mary Ann Burston, Baltimore, MD; five In-Laws: Annette Avery, Hopewell, VA; Deborah (Glenn) Chavis, Boydton, VA; Jocelyn S. Jiggetts, Ellis Sturdivant (Jackie), Mallory Andre (Shantell) Sturdivant, all of South Hill, VA; devoted friends- David Higgs and Wendell Gary and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

I have such fond memories of my cousin John. He would visit us in NY and we’d all go sightseeing.Family reunions,and other opportunities for everyone to gather were special.He had a good sense of humor and a nice smile.John loved his family, his friends,and loved serving the Lord in many ways especially driving for his seniors. What a faithful and kind example.He will be missed.My sincere condolences and prayers are with the family.Annette
