I taught English at Varina High School from 1970-1974 and had the privilege of having James in my class. I never saw James without a smile on his face. Anywhere he would see me, he'd make sure to come over to greet me. Many students pass through a teacher's classroom and many never leave a mark on the teacher. James was one of those I never forgot. Thinking of him always put a smile on my face. I regret that on many trips to Richmond from Virginia Beach that I didn't stop by the school and see James. I can envision that beautiful smile and wonderful greeting. We would have had a great reunion. You were a man with a big heart, James and you taught me much. Godspeed, my friend. My deepest sympathy to your family. Marilyn Chelder Hechtkopf

There was never a dull moment. He really was the glue that kept the school together. He always spoke to me and told me to smile. Truly a legend and a great man. May he be at eternal peace❤️

James always had my back when we were in high school. He was a true friend, honest and caring are just two of his many qualities. James and I enjoyed many good times as we both returned to Varina High as employees of Henrico County Schools. After retirement, I lost touch with my dear friend. Always thought he’d be here. It is heartbreaking to know that I will no longer here his laughter or be able to ask him if he had the numbers. James was a special friend to so many and he will be missed terribly. To James’ family my sincere condolences. May God’s grace and peace be with you all. Denise Krevonick

I had the pleasure to work with James at Varina High School for 6 years. He not only worked hard to keep the school beautiful, he worked hard at loving the kids and the staff. Since I have been gone, I return from time to time for activities and James still greeted me with that same smile and we would immediately start cutting up. There will never be another James Dawkins and I blessed to have touched shoulders with him!!

My family and the Dawkins family were neighbors and very close friends growing up on Route 5. We all played and went to school together. I remember riding horses and playing baseball in 'the field' we always had so much fun. We've all grown up now with kids and grandkids of our own but, we carry great memories of our childhood together. We love toy all and, send our condolences to the family. Rest in Heaven James, you will be truly missed. Much love. The Howie Family.

I was a new teacher at Varina HS last year. One of the first people I met on staff that continually, and unforgettably had a smile on his face and a kind word to all was James. Over the past almost year and a half we discussed everything from personal finance to cars, to hunting. He will be truly missed, and already is by staff, family and the thousands of students that he knew over his career at Varina HS.
