Mattie T. Pilson Bullard

Mattie T. Pilson Bullard, of Lithonia, GA, departed this life on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She was born November 3, 1943 in Virginia to the late General Alfred Pilson and the late Olivia Johnson Pilson. She was preceded in death by a brother John A. Pilson, (Catherine Pilson).

She was a member St. Phillips AME Church in Georgia where she was a Choir member, a member of the Steward Board and a class leader. She was a past member of Star of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Bassett, VA, where she was a choir member and a Sunday school teacher.

Mattie was a 1962 graduate of George Washington Carver High School Martinsville, VA. She was a graduate of Virginia Seminary (now Virginia University) Lynchburg, VA and Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) Hampton, VA with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She was an Activity Director of Bassett Recreation Center in Bassett, VA.

She was a retired teacher from Clayton County Public Schools, Jonesboro, GA, Henry County Public Schools, in VA and Hampton Public Schools Hampton, VA. She also taught in Italy.

Mattie leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Olivia Walker, one grandson, Matthew D. Smith of Lithonia, GA; one granddaughter, Lia T. Walker of Colorado; Two sisters, Gloria A Pilson of Bassett, VA and Joan P. Pilson of Rocky Mt, VA; four brothers, Larry W. Pilson (Lisa) of Cascade, VA, Dr. Harry J Pilson (Olivia) of Fredericksburg, VA, Rev. Oscar C. Pilson(Eleanor) of Winston-Salem, NC and Nathan H. Pilson of Bassett, VA; dear friend Leola Redd Pilson of Fieldale, VA; three aunts, Lucy Pilson and Ruby Pilson both of Bassett, VA and Ida Mae Lawrence of New York, NY, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be held, Friday, January 31, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. at Star Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 1116 Mary Hunter Dr., Bassett, VA, with Rev. Oscar C. Pilson and Dr. Harry J. Pilson, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of Gloria and Nathan Pilson, 759 John Henry Road, Bassett, VA. Interment will be at Carver Memorial Gardens, 2236 Carver Road, Martinsville, VA.
