Ivy Jean Carter was born June 4, 1940 in Martinsville, Virginia to the late John Alfred and Lula Hodge Carter. She attended Henry County Public Schools, where she graduated from GW Carver High in Fieldale, Virginia in 1958.

After high school, Ivy attended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (formally known as Maryland State), where she graduated Suma Cum Laude and received her Bachelors of Arts degree in Music in 1962. Among the many accomplishments during her tenure at Maryland State, she was President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; Who’s Who Among Students In American Colleges and Universities during 1960 and 1961. She was also Miss Maryland State in 1961; Vice President, Women’s Council; Parliamentarian, Women’s Council; a Member of the College Choir; President, Pan-Hellenic Council; Vice President, Charm Club; Student Counsel Secretary 1960; Captain, Angel Flight; Alpha Kappa Mu Interest Group; Vice President of the Charm Club; Clefters; and a Student Counselor.

She also attended Columbia University in New York City, where she received a Masters Degree in Education.

In 1964, she married the love of her life, Harry F. Brown, Jr. (affectionately known as Bo). He preceded her in death in 1977. From this union are two children Theresa and Stephen. Ivy and Harry resided in New York City for several years. During that time, Ivy taught school in the New York City Public School System until they moved to Washington, DC in 1970.

While living in Washington, DC, she worked as a faculty member at DC Teachers’ College, now known as the University of the District of Columbia. She went on to become a Training Specialist at the U.S. Small Business Administration. However, the love of teaching students and interacting with young people drew her once again to the classroom. She was an educator for Montgomery County Public Schools, specifically Wheaton High School for 25 years, where she retired in 2010.

Ivy leaves to mourn her two children Theresa and Stephen Brown. She is also survived by three brothers: Leon Carter, Harold Carter, Alfred Carter (Mamie); two sisters-in-law, Alicia Renee Harris (Mark), Blondie Brown (Tyrone). She was preceded in death by three sisters: Rubena Rossley, Betty Mitchell, and Juanita Whyte, and two brothers: James Monroe and John E. Carter Jr., all of Martinsville, Va. Additionally she leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Unfortunately, due to the progressing health concerns of the COVID-19, the family of Ivy J Carter Brown will not have a public funeral and will observe her home going in private. Public viewing will be held at Hairston Funeral Home Thursday March 19th, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and on Friday March 20, 2020, a funeral will be held at Jerusalem Christian Church (DOC) at 11:30 a.m. for family only.
