Mr. Wavie Jr. Cannon

Deacon Wavie Cannon, Jr., of Montgomery, Alabama, transitioned Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at his residence. He was born January 25, 1949 in Montgomery, Alabama to the late Willie Pearl Wilson-Cannon and Wavie Cannon, Sr. A 1967 graduate of George Washington Carver High School, he received undergraduate, Master's and AA Master’s degrees from Alabama State University. His lifelong experience as an educator and school counselor began in Baldwin Michigan. In later years, moving home to Montgomery, Alabama, he enjoyed being a driver’s education teacher and school counselor at Robert E. Lee and Montgomery County High Schools. His passion for music, electronics and Ham Radio was enjoyed. Daily, he was an advocate for education, constantly motivating his grandchildren to strive for excellence.

The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2020 at the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church of 3601 Hayneville Road, Montgomery, Alabama. Reverend, Dr. Herman E. Calhoun is officiating. Reverend Major L. Lane, Eulogist. The body of Mr. Cannon will lie in repose one hour before service. Interment follows the service at Montgomery Memorial Heights Cemetery, 3001 Simmons Drive, Montgomery, Alabama 36108

Survivors include a devoted wife, Alicia T. Cannon, sons; Wavie Batiest Cannon (Lisa) Frederick Ronada Cannon (Yashica); and John Orlando Holt; brother, Orlando P. Cannon (Donna T.); sister, Ann E. Thomas; granddaughter, Nyya M. Cannon; adopted granddaughter Kameron R. (Tootie) Richardson; grandsons, Tyler J. Harris, Iaan Batiest Cannon, and Ke’lab Orlando Holt; nephews Orlando Demetri Cannon (Canetra); and Kori J. Cannon; great nieces, Zoey Brenae and Koriah Grace Cannon; adopted grandsons, Brandon Harris (Nellie); Matthew J. White, and Cameron Harris; 1st mother-in-law, Lillie Marie Porterfield; numerous cousins, aunt, Barbara Harris; brother friends, Aaron Chambers, William Larry Nichols, Jacob Qualls, Wayne Collins, Dennis Murphy, Johnny Beville & Lee Ballard; sister friends, Gloria C. Jones and Betty P. Beville; and his yellow grand-cat (Bella Chris).

He was preceded in death by his first wife, mother of his two sons, Fannie Delois Porterfield-Cannon; sister, Brenda Joyce Cannon; 2nd mother-in-law, Lucy Harris-Taylor; (2) fathers-in-law, Deacon Robert Porterfield, Sr. and Deacon Cecil Taylor; aunts, Hester Wilson, and Barbara Harris; uncles, and numerous other relatives.

Note: Family & Friends will assemble at 9:45 a.m. and depart from Phillips-Riley Funeral Home, 2284 West Fairview Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama, to implement the funeral possession to the church. Phillips-Riley Funeral Home, Directing.
