She was born on March 7, 1938 in York County, South Carolina to the late Novella Spencer and Leonard Barnett. She was reared by her grandparents, the late Beaulah and Dan Barnett.
Ethel was a graduate of Roosevelt High School, class of 1957. She studied nursing at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She was married to the late Samuel Jr. Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her son: Lewis Samuel Phillips and great granddaughter: Desire Slade Lowery.
Ethel leaves to cherish her memories to her daughter: Earlene “Sally” Phillips, her sons; Gary Phillips, Jerry Phillips, Michael Phillips all of Gastonia, NC and Marion Phillips of New Jersey; her grandchildren: Dwanda Phillips, Devonne Phillips, Javette Phillips, Danielle Lowery, Demario Burris, David Lowery, Jr., Jalil Brown, Quasia Phillips, Quadir Phillips and Michael Phillips, Jr. and eleven great grandchildren; her sister: Reola Hinton; her brothers: George Setzer and Thomas Barnett all of New York; her aunt: Magonlia Barnett Williams of Gastonia and sister-in-law: Ellie Phillips of New Jersey; family members she raised: Peggy P. Hoyle, Wayne Williams, Gloria Pendergrass, Terry P. Myers and Xavier Williams, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
