Obituary For Janice Marie Bass Burton

Janice Marie Bass Burton, 58, departed this earthly home on Saturday, March 21, 2020.

Janice was born July 22, 1961 to William “Ben” and the late Gracie Lee Turrentine Bass in Durham, NC. Janice attended Durham County Public Schools and was a 1979 graduate of Northern High School. Janice graduated from Durham Technical College with an associate degree in Secretarial Science in 1981. Janice worked many years in the collections and credit managing field. In 1982 Janice married the gentle giant, Dorsey James “Jimmy” Burton, Jr. and this union brought forth the loves of her life, Justin James and Jamien Benson. Janice spent a lot of her free time supporting Jimmy and Justin at softball games, Justin and Jamie at basketball games as well as her nieces and nephews’ events, but she loved playing bingo the most. Janice was a supportive wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend that never hesitated to bring her infamous pasta or potato salad to an event. In addition to her devoted husband of 37 years, Jimmy, Janice leaves behind to keep her memory alive, her son Justin of Los Angeles, California, her son Jamien of the home, her father Ben Bass of Rougemont, her brother John Michael Bass (Hallie) of Bahama, a sister Pamela Bass of Rougemont, mother in love Mary Peaks Burton, brothers in love Anthony Burton and Gerald Burton (Angela), sisters in love Marilyn, Glenda and Bertha Michelle Burton and Rhonda Thomas (Jerry), her aunts Shirley Cole, Alberta Trent, Polly Bass, Nettie Parker and Nellia Nicholson. She leaves behind a God brother, Willie Marrow (Margie) and God sister Carolyn Hamlet. She will especially be missed by a host of spoiled nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

I didn't know that the last time I hugged you would be the last time. I didn't know our last conversation would be the last time I heard your voice. I would've squeezed you a little tighter and talked a little longer and laughed alot harder. I would've thanked you for being the very best of an aunt to me, to Ivan and my kids. I would've told you how much I appreciated you and Jimmy being the "backup grandparents " for Mari and Zay when my parents couldn't make it to their event. I was your first "baby" and you loved me like nobody's business, just like I do your first born. You loved all of your nieces and nephews above and beyond an aunt's duty and we looked to you as a second mama. The looks, the laughs until we wiped tears, the debates, the phone calls, the kitchen chronicles I'll miss and treasure forever. You knew you didn't have to worry about the guys, that those of us left behind got them. Although my heart is completely shattered for our guys, I pray for your sister, Pam, all of your sister in laws (your sisters), I know what it's like to miss mine across oceans, but can't imagine missing her across time. My daddy loved you so much and I'm glad in his retirement that he was able to help care for you these past few months, he only wanted you to fight and get better. Grandaddy will be ok, he always is, but we will watch him even closer now that his " other mama" isn't here to boss him around. Janice Burton you messed us up with this one girl, but you're where you wanted to be most...back with Gracie Lee. I love you. I love you. I love you. Felicia
