Obituary For James Brockington

The Governor of South Carolina advises to limit public gatherings to 50 guests or less to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC carefully considered this recommendation and ask that additional guest please participate via live-streaming if it is authorized by the family.

Private Funeral Service for Mr. James Sylvester Brockington will be conducted 3:00 PM Saturday, April 4, 2020 at J. O. & Annette Smith Memorial Chapel, 307 S. Johns St., Florence. Interment will follow 11:00 AM Monday, April 6, 2020 in Florence National Cemetery, directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.

James Sylvester Brockington was born in Florence, South Carolina on October 1, 1954 to the late James “Son” and Leola Mitchell Brockington. He passed from his earthly life into eternal peace on Monday, March 30, 2020.

“Mann” or “Brock” as he was affectionately called was a devoted husband; father, brother, uncle, and friend.

Brock accepted Jesus the Christ as his personal Lord Savior and was baptized at Maxwell Baptist Church.

Brock was educated in the Florence Public Schools and graduated in the Class of 1973 from West Florence High School. After graduation, Brock proudly served his country in the United States Army. After servicing in the Military, he was a truck driver for over thirty years and took pride in his profession.

An avid baseball player for the City of Florence League, East Florence Trojans and Florence Giants, Brock had a passion for coaching and relished the chance to coach his daughter Courtney’s softball team. Anyone that knew Brock knew he was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan with an infectious smile and compassionate spirit who could cook the best creamy grits in the world. As a father figure to many, he had a listening ear and was a man who loved his community.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lisha and Josephine Kelly Lewis; four brothers, LeVan Brockington, David Mitchell, Chester Brockington and Gilbert Brockington; two sisters, Diane Brockington and Doris Davis; one brother-in-law, Glenn Borden; and one sister-in-law, Noville Brockington.

Left to cherish his precious memories are his wife, Clara Lewis-Brockington; two devoted and dutiful daughters, Courtney Brockington and Caitlyn Brockington both of Columbia, South Carolina; one brother, Edward Johnson of Florence, South Carolina; three sisters, Edna Thomas of Richmond, Virginia, Vermelle (Roscoe) Wilson of Garner, North Carolina and Evelyn Borden of McDonough, Georgia; five brother-in-laws all of Florence, South Carolina; three sister-in-laws of Florence, South Carolina; two uncles, George (Audrey) Brockington and Leroy Brockington both of Florence, South Carolina; three aunts, Sarah Douglas, Jean Brockington both of Florence, South Carolina, and Elizabeth Drayton of Lansing, Michigan.; one great uncle; and three great aunts; a special niece, Tamara Wilson of Florence, South Carolina; a godson, Marquez Samuels of Florence, South Carolina; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives; and friends.
