Alonzo James Spires, Sr.

Alonzo “Squawk” James Spires was the eldest child of the late Alonzo Williams and the late Mary Lee Spires. He made his entrance into this world on July 16, 1950 in Fort Pierce, FL. He prided himself with being the oldest of his siblings. He was called “Squawk” by all of his love ones and friends.

Alonzo matriculated through the local schools of St. Lucie County graduating from Lincoln Park Academy in 1968. He served in the United States Army. After serving in the military, he attended Jones College in Fort Pierce, FL. Early in life he met and married Gwen Williams and to this union 6 children were born, Angelique, Alonzo,Cherie, Latonya, Kiesha and Terrance. In addition, he had one other son, Alonzo Spires III.

Later he met, Gwendolyn Hamilton and they embarked on a life together for over 45 years. Together, they raised a family of 5, Antonio, Lakendria, Antravious, Anthony, Alonzo IV (infant son) and Latangela. The Lord was good to them and blessed them abundantly with grands and great grands whom he loved dearly. Over the years, Alonzo has worked on several jobs retiring from The World of Plastics. During his illness, Alonzo’s family expressed their love and devotion to him daily. It was known in the way that they took care of him. They served him with love and respect. Daily, he wanted to go for a ride or take a walk outside and there was always someone there to ensure that this happened. He joined the House of God Church alongside his wife.

On Friday, April 10, 2020, after battling for many months, Squawk was granted his angel wings as he answered the Master’s call. He was preceded in death by his children Latonya, Alonzo IV, Cherie, Alonzo (Bunchie), his mother Mary Lee Spires, father, Alonzo Williams, his sister, Mavaretta Stockton German, along with other loved ones that were dear to him.

Left to cherish his memories are a loving and devoted wife Gwendolyn Spires of Fort Pierce, FL; 4 daughters Angelique Spires, Keisha Spires of Tampa, FL, LaKendria Watson, LaTangela (David) Hicks of Fort Pierce, FL; 6 sons Alonzo (Christine) Spires of Louisiana, Terrance (Martina) Spires of Tampa, FL, Antonio Watson, Antravious Spires, and Anthony Spires all of Fort Pierce, FL; 49 grandchildren, and 29 great- grands; mother-n-law, Elizabeth Hamilton, 3 sisters, Hilda Faye Stockton, Orlando, FL, Sandra Washington Wilson, Kimberly (Jeff) Williams, Ft. Pierce, FL; brother O’Hara (Angela) Stockton; aunts, Irene Spires, Pearl Spires, Alberta Anderson; Uncle, Randy Spires of Miami; sister-n-law, Theresa (Johnnie) Lewis, brother-n-laws, Larry (Celeste) Hamilton, Lewis Hamilton, Alvin Hamilton and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, special cousins, Bruce and Rosa Wright of Atlanta, GA; and friends.

Public viewing for Alonzo Spires will take place on Friday, April 17, 2020 from 3-5, with a wake service from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Stone Brothers Funeral Home in Fort Pierce, FL. Due to the current circumstances, seating is limited. Funeral services will convene on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, FL beginning at 1:00pm. Burial will immediately follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Fort Pierce, FL.
