We lost a family member and good friend dating back to grade school. Eddie White was a person looked up to and loved by all who came into his life. During my years with Eddie we played together, of course trying to get the best of each other in competition. We rode bikes to school together and later he would pick me up on his motorbike in the car. Thanks Eddie! As we moved up to high school at Saint Augustine, Eddie was a better athlete than most of us. We started on the varsity in both football and basketball early on, and he excelled in baseball. We ended up being co-captains of the football and basketball teams in our senior year. After high school we attended different colleges, he Alabama State and me Xavier University in New Orleans. We competed against each other in college football. One thing that has always been etched in my mind during that college competition was when I slightly twisted his ankle, and he in turn kicked me in the face. After that happened, I could only think, hey that was what he was supposed to do. Even after that event, when we had the opportunity to see each other, we never brought it up in conversation. Eddie was raised in an environment that will perhaps never be experienced again. He attended a small Catholic segregated school that educated black children from the first to the twelth grade that had us believing that we could achieve anything that we set our mind and body on course to do. The only memories of my friend Eddie White are positive and everlasting. I am so proud and honored to have been his friend. Hey miss you and love you man, and also love to your caring family. Love you man! Your classmate LeeRoy Holmes, class of 1956 Saint Augustine High School!
