I just learned of Greg's untimely passing. What A Shock! I worked with Greg several times while serving as the AETC Staff Curator, managing the Art and Museum Programs. As many others have said, the one overriding memory is of the joy he exuded, always smiling and cheerful. He was a real gentleman who will be missed greatly! CMSgt (Ret) Robert V "Bob" Crawford

There are no words that can explain the pain I felt when I heard of Greg's passing. A great man and friend. Mahogany Row at the State Department will never be the same without your smiling face Cynthia Dial

- na

My condolences and prayers to Greg's family. He has such a positive, welcoming spirit and always wore a smile on his face. Each and every time we interacted, I always walked away saying to myself, "what a great guy." We would always joke about how sharp he dressed. I would tell him often he is wasting these "masterpieces" in this 8-sided building. What a huge loss not only to the AA family, but to the Air Force. Rest in Peace friend.

- na

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Greg's passing. His authenticity and brillant smile brought joy to every room he entered and friend he made. Respectfully keeping the Thompson family in my warmest thoughts as you navigate this difficult time. Wishing you strength and healing. Carol Mouzon

I am heart broken. I have wandered the halls of the Pentagon with Greg for many years. Even before we were acquainted, Greg always had time to stop in the hallways to explain a new piece of art to me or to help me appreciate the sense and context of the artist. After a few years, as we got to know each other, he would show up in my office with new collection pieces he thought I might appreciate. We fast became friends more than work colleagues. He was a gentleman, a patriot, dedicated to his country and he will be missed. He did his family and his country proud. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who loved him. Rest In Peace Greg, Vr Dano Sitterly

Oh my, I just have no words! I've known this man for over 25 yrs. It doesn't seem real. My thoughts and prayers go out to all family members and friends. Greg was an amazing co-worker, friend, and patriot of our nation. As I type this message, I can't help but to see his big brilliant smile and perfectly tailored clothes. Let me tell you, Greg was THE sharpest dressed man in the Pentagon! A polished gentleman indeed. He was such a positive person who went out of his way to help others both in and out of the workplace. I am deeply saddened by this loss, his spirit will forever live through the the significant contributions he has made throughout the Air Force and State Department. No person can walk the Pentagon halls without appreciating the beautiful art displays...Greg made this happen. We'll forever honor you Greg. Rest peacefully my friend. - Clarice Mack

Greg, hard for one male to say to another, but I Love You My Friend. So happy we were able to get together twice this year. So many years together in the Air Force Art Program. That big smile and "Hi Harley" always kept the donations coming. Also the visits and common bond with Judy and the kids kept things on a personal level. That last couple of visits together will be a treasure for the family to remember. Love ya buddy, Harley

I met Greg at Bldg 406, Fort Meyers VA in 1991he would tease me about being a country girl (NC) trying to hang in the big city. I would tell him he was jealous because he was in the wrong branch of service (USAF)-I was being all I could be in the US Army. We would hang out and he would light up the room with that infectious smile everywhere we went. He would meet my family on a ride share to Atlanta and he fit right in as a close relative clowning everybody playing Spades at the fish fry. We would eventually spread our wings and go separate ways on our military journey but keeping in touch and catching up as we never parted. I will cherish our friendship and lament that our Father has called one of the "good guys" home. My deepest sympathy to Giovanni, family, and friendsyou are not alone at this difficult time. Caring hearts surround you in the loss of your father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend! He will truly be missed by many! Sincerest condolences Fanita "Nikki" Nicholson, Sergeant First Class (Ret) US Army Fredericksburg VA

Greg, Your style and grace will be missed. Everyday at work on the 7th floor, I would always walk pass to say hi and to checkout your stylist socks. Sometimes you would forget them and go without socks. Sorry I put you out their but we would always laugh everytime you left them at your other job. Your feet were probably sweaty. On numerous occasions, we would talk about your son and my now 16 month baby girl Elizabeth. I was sad to hear that you passed it was a shock to me. I will keep your family in my prayers to continue to stay strong.SHANITA

To family and friends please accept my most sincere condolences on the loss of Greg. He was an amazing human being with the full measure of what a man should strive to become. He possessed the ability to light up a room. His untimely death will create a void in our hearts, and we have lost a perfect citizen. But Heaven has gained a perfect Angel. He will watch over his love ones from Heaven's door and your memories of him will sustain you through the grief until your unite with him again above the clouds. Blessings to each of you during bereavement. Brigadier General (Retired) Jimmy E. McMillian

Greg and I worked together at the Air Force Art Program when he was still enlisted and I was finishing high school. I learned so much from him about life in and outside of the office and I appreciate that he was always willing to share his knowledge with me. I'll definitely always remember fondly how he seemed to run into someone he knew regardless of where we happened to be in the city, and how walking with Greg around the Pentagon was like walking with the mayor. It was terrible hearing about Greg's passing but I'll be sure to reach out to young guys coming up and impart any wisdom I can share. I hope it will be as beneficial to them as what Greg shared with me. My condolences to Giovanni and Greg's family for their loss. Milton F. Lawler

To Giovanni, the Thompson family! I am Ray "Kutty" Hunnicutt, Greg aka "Hammer" and I have been friends for 35 years, first meeting at Yokota Air Base, Japan. Your father and I were brothers; I share this Prayer of Comfort - You hold time within your hands, and see it all, from beginning to end. Please keep and carry these precious people in their sadness and loss. Cover them with your great wings of love, give their weary hearts rest and their minds sound sleep. Lord, lift their eyes so that they may catch a glimpse of eternity, and be comforted by the promise of heaven. I ask all this in the precious name of Jesus... Amen

I First Met Greg In 1989 & Had The Privilege Of Being His Roommate At Fort Myer, Va When He First Arrived In The DC Area. From The Very Moment I Met Him I Knew That "Hammer" Would Be Someone Who Could Be Counted On If A Situation Ever Occurred. Many Times On Three-Day Weekends We Would Drive Down South & I Would Drop Him Off In Atlanta, Ga & I Would Continue To My Home In Columbus, MS. Greg Was A Person Who Never Shucked A Mission Given To Him & Approached All Challenges With The Zeal & Fidelity To Persevere. Greg, To Me, Was A Great Man With A Heart Made Of Pure Gold. I Will Definitely Miss Our Conversations & The Many Text Messages We Shared. We Have Lost A Great Friend But God Loves Great Things Too. To Greg's Family & Many Friends, Be Ye Steadfast, Unmovable, Always Abounding In The Work Of The Lord; For As So Much As We Know That Greg's Labour Was Not In Vain In The Lord. God's Sweet Blessings. Gregory E. Strong Master Sergeant (Ret) USAF Columbus, MS

Greg was an outstanding professional, and he made a major contribution to the Air Force Art Program. It was always a pleasure working with him because his attitude was never less than 100% "Can Do." Greg never met a problem that he didn't meet head on and overcome. He was never satisfied with less than perfect work, and on top of all that, he was a remarkably decent, kind, and good-natured man. I will never forget him, particularly the fact that I never saw him without a smile on his face. God bless you Greg! I envy the conversations you must be having in Heaven with some of the great artists of the past. Dick Hallion

The world was a better place for having Greg in it. The Special Events Team at the National Museum of the USAF are truly saddened to hear of his passing. We spent many days with Greg planning events to go along with the Art Exhibits both at Wright-Patterson and D.C. I can still see us all bunched around the "kids table" during the Heritage Board Dinners. We laughed so hard the Distinguished Guests came over and wanted to join our table. Greg was talented, humble and full of humor. Wish we had a chance to tell him "See you on the other side!" Our hearts go out to his family! BIG LOSS! Teresa Montgomery and the Special Events Team

- na

When that big booming voice appeared at the other end of a phone call, asking me to a mission, it made my day. I could hear it now, as if he just called, it was that powerful and memorable. Only matched by that smile and joy that he brought to my experiences as an Air Force Artist. He will be missed and forever remembered as the kind, caring, happy soul that he was and the joy he brought to all. Melanie Reim

"To be absent in the body is to be present with the LORD" A friend who was like a brother to our family...when Howard brought you into our lives we were truly blessed to have you...we're a large family who can be loud and very fun-loving,and you fit right in...always sharply dressed, and interacting with everyone with such a calm temperament... Howard is the youngest of eight, seven sisters, (presently five) and no bio brothers, but he found a brother in you, as did our entire family...I'm sure I can speak for my family and myself in saying how much we love you and will miss you... you will be forever in our hearts

A cousin, a friend, a devoted family member, a good man, and a fellow retired Airmen. Greg was a structured man, spoke with convictions and methodically coupled with intellectual wit. I remember visiting with his immediate family as a teen - a joy I will always treasure. Many years, later I had a layover at Yokota AB, Japan, and heard a voice that I recognized - it was Greg. I walked behind him while he was talking and said, I know you - your Mom and Dad's were both name "Jessie". Greg turned and yelled, "Cuz". I did not know that Greg had joined an elite group - the United States Air Force. We remained in contact through the years and only lived a few miles apart when I was in Lorton, Virginia. I last saw Greg at the Mullins Family Reunion in July 2019 where he was accompanied by his son, Giovannia, sister Joyce and brother Mike. I am confident that Greg would want our family and especially his son to stay close. I will do my part to ensure that is a reality. . Greg Mary and I will certainly will miss you, and we bid you "farewell and peaceful journey".
