Tonkins family, I had the pleasure of meeting Alvin a few years back at one of our generator classes. We struck up a conversation and became fast friends. Alvin frequented our store as a loyal customer, but more importantly, a dear friend. His warm smile and kind demeanor always brightened our day. We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Tommy Parham and the entire Capital Electric family

Pam and Family, I am truly sorry that it has taken me this long to send my heartfelt sympathy and prayers. I knew Alvin thru work he was an electrician, later contractor later HUD maintenance and contractor, I met him thru inspecting his work. I have to tell you that Alvin was probably the best man I have ever known. I have known and know a lot of good people and I do not mean to sound judgmental when I say everyone has a somewhat less than good side no matter how good they are especially myself but not Alvin, if he had a bad side I never saw it. Even when he was upset due to things on the job, he made excuses for them. He was truly an outstanding person who was a good man and a good Christian. He practiced what he believed every day. I have often told people that Alvin was the only person I knew who if he told me he did it, I KNEW it was done. (He sometime knew this and it would embarrass him so much 'cause I would tell people this and sometimes in front of him). Don't get me wrong, he had to say he done it himself not that someone else did it,(He was a bit more trusting than I am). Alvin often met me on a job in the past 30 years and he would be telling me what was wrong before I even got out of my car but he did good work. He was proud of his family especially his wife Pam. I am going to miss him and you are all in my prayers.

Sadly, my time with my cousin was limited. Most recent encounters were centered around family gatherings. Each time, Alvin was warm, loving and uplifting. His gentle manner and kind words touched me. May his light continue to shine on his family and all who loved him. ~ Love, Serena Mosteller (MD)

To Shay, & the Tonkins Family; it is with sincere prayers & condolences during this time of bereavement as we pray for peace & strength. I met Alvin upon his arrival to the Greensboro Housing Authority; a professional model of an employee, always willing to assist at a given moment. Upon meeting your dad, we found out our daughters were classmates at Southeast Guilford Middle; we would converse as he cared about your education goals. For example, if you were stressed out, he would give you a scripture out of the Bible. My condolences and prayers to his family. He will be missed by the entire GHA family. -Will Moore

Please except my sincere condolences to the family. Mr. Takens was not only an awesome man of God, great electrician, but a true friend. He was very dependable, trustworthy, and Godly. He always took care of my families electrical needs. Just seeing Mr. Tonkins brighten up the room. He always had a kind word, and wonderful smile, that brightened your day. Mr. Tonkins loved his family and always spoke of them; and counted it a blessing to be chosen to be a part of their lives. When God made Mr. Tonkins he broke the mold. He will truly be missed.
