MR. WILLIAM HENRY CHAVIS, SR, affectionately known as “Bill Chavis,” was born March 25, 1925 to the late John and Nannie Davis Chavis in Warren County, NC and departed this life May 26, 2020 in Glenburnie Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Richmond, VA at the young age of 95. He was the youngest of six children, all of whom preceded him in death.

The schools of Palmer Springs were the sources of his primary education. In 1943 he entered the US Navy and received three medals and an honorable discharge in December of 1946.

Bill was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church, founded by the late James Solomon Russell in Palmer Springs, VA. He later joined St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served as Senior Warden for several years. He attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church regularly in later years. Bill was married to Marguerite Alexander on June 16, 1947 and to this union six children were born. His wife, Marguerite and daughter, Rose Marie “Toni” Edwards, preceded him in death.

Bill established Chavis Construction in 1968, which he later passed on to his sons, Glenn and John “Al” Chavis, who worked alongside him for many years. He was also the builder for Feggins Funeral Home in 1974 and several homes and businesses in the surrounding area. Bill leaves to cherish his memory, five children- William “Sonny” (Linda) Chavis, Jr., Richmond, VA; Glenn R. (Debborah) Chavis, Sr., Palmer Springs, VA; John “Al” (Violet) Chavis, Winston Salem, NC; Brian “Skip” (Margaret) Chavis, Richmond, VA; and Jennifer “Cookie” (Michael) Washington, Leland, NC; devoted son-in-law, Jesse Edwards, Jr., daughter-in-law, Carolyn “Byrd” Blackwell and niece, Ebonie Diane Alexander; 8 grandchildren plus 4 bonus grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren plus 5 bonus great-grandchildren, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Bill Chavis will long be remembered for his stellar craftsmanship and construction expertise with a slogan of... “I don’t build the most, just the best”.

The Chavis Family, There are some who would vow that life isn't fair. They believe the worst is yet to come, that evil will always conquer good, and that we have no control over our fate. It's true, there are storms that shake our foundations and monsters that threaten to tear us limb from limb. We will make terrible mistakes. We will fall short of our expectations. No one is exempt from pain and fear. But life, and what comes after, is a beautiful mixture of darkness and light, sacrifice and salvation. There is no fine line between the two, for both are needed. Where there is grief, there will be joy. Where there is heartbreak, love will follow." I'm so sorry! Barbara Brown Finley & Family

My heart was saddened when I received the news of Mr. Chavis' transition. But in the midst of the sorrow, I was encouraged to know that he suffers no more, and has now entered eternal rest from a life that was long-lived and fruitful. Gain comfort in knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. He now rests in the loving arms of Jesus, and you will see him again in the appointed time. Lovingly submitted. Dr. Michael "Punkin" Evans
