Obituary For Savannah J. LeSueur

Mrs. Savannah Johnson LeSueur, 100, of Madison, NC died May 27, 2020. A Graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Collins Cemetery, Madison, NC. Public viewing will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home Chapel, Madison, NC.

Mrs. Savannah J. LeSueur, nee Johnson was born on March 13, 1920 in rural Rockingham County. She was the daughter of the late Annie Johnson, nee Joyce and Walter Johnson. Savannah departed her life on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at the age of 100. As a child, Savannah attended elementary school at Martinview Primitive Baptist Church. Later, she graduated from the former Madison Colored School in Madison, NC. During World War II, Savannah enlisted in the U. S. Army, traveling worldwide where she served as a surgical nurse assistant. Savannah married her high school sweetheart, Robert Lincoln LeSueur (Bob), who had been drafted into the U. S. Army. After their service in World War II, they returned home to Madison, NC. Using their GI Bill benefits, they enrolled at Agricultural and Technical College, now, N C A& T State University, Greensboro, NC Savannah received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. After graduating college, Savannah was employed as a teacher at Charles Drew School, Madison, NC. At Charles Drew she taught Home Economics for approximately fourteen years, sharing with her students her fabulous cooking skills and unique sewing ability as well as Etiquette 101. After the closing of Charles Drew, Savannah continued teaching Home Economics at Madison Mayodan High School for fifteen years until her retirement of 30 year service. She was a faithful member of The Beulah Baptist Missionary Church where she was a member of the choir, Missionary, Scholarship and Veteran Ministries. Mrs. LeSueur was a member of the American Legion Post #534 of Mayodan, NC and Jolly 12 Club, along with serving on numerous community and educational organizations throughout Rockingham County. Savannah and Bob LeSueur had two children, Patricia (Patsy) and Bob Jr. Her husband, Bob Sr. and daughter Patricia and brother, R J Johnson all preceded her in death. Left to cherish her memory: her son; Bob, Jr., and grandchildren; Shawn Johnson of Madison NC, Teree LeSueur of Atlanta GA, Carey and Claire LeSueur of Mansfield TX and two great-grandchildren of Atlanta GA, brother; James E. Johnson of Winston-Salem, NC, two sisters; Louise Noel of Martinsville, VA and Molene Johnson of Madison, NC and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
