Obituary For Charles Wells

Charles Wells, 75, of New Bern died Monday, June 15, 2020 at CarolinaEast Medical Center.

A private service will be held.

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a later date for family members and friends who wish to honor his memory.

In lieu of floral arrangements memorial donations may be sent to American Cancer Society 930-B Wellness Dr, Greenville, NC 27834

Charles graduated from Frederick Douglas High School in Elm City, NC. Upon graduation, he relocated to New York. Charles joined the NYC Police Department where he served for over 25 years as a patrolman, Youth Officer and Police Science instructor. He played a key role in the lives of youth.

He loved sports and took great pride in restoring antique cars. His 1959 Pontiac Bonneville was his favorite, for which numerous awards and accolades were won. Charles was the President of the Antique Auto Club, past president of the Fairfield Harbour Garden Club and volunteer for the New Bern Democratic Party.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tousant Wells and Mattie Hines Ricks Wells; sister, Elaine Dortch.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Wells of the home; two daughters, Kim Ozley, Dix Hills, NY and Vonda Merrill, Manassas, VA;; his four grandchildren: Brandon and Jordan Ozley, Claudia and William Merrill; two sisters, Hester Dorsett, Queens Village, NY and Gwendolyn Ximena Clayton, Washington, DC;, brother-in-law Oran Dorsett of Queens, NY, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins.
