Maggie Lee Denmark Grier

12/25/1930 - 06/11/2020

Maggie Lee Denmark Grier was born December 25, 1930 in Monticello, Florida to James L. Denmark and Henrietta Speed Denmark. She was the seventh of fourteen siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Henrietta Denmark; daughter Carolyn Wright-Hills and siblings John Hightower, Aaron, Cornell and James Denmark, Emma Morris, Julia Randolph Boston, Clara Kleckley, Bernice McDonald, Corine Newsome, Juanita Gainous and Theda Black; and grandchildren Bryant Wright and Jonica Hills.

She spent her early years in Monticello and later moved to Ft. Pierce where she attended St. Lucie County Schools. Years later, Maggie met and married J.B. Wright in 1949. Out of this union there were seven children, three girls and four boys. Maggie worked as a housekeeper to support her family. Eventually, her passion for children led her to become a foster parent. During her labor of love as a foster parent, she cared for over three hundred children in a span of twenty years. Many of her foster children continued to visit and call her as they reached adulthood. While she was a foster parent, she fulfilled her dream of getting her high school diploma at the age of 72.

Maggie was a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years. While a member, she served in many positions. She was the Mother of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church and shared her loved for Jesus to all she met. At the age of twelve, her dad told her, “Get to know the Lord for yourself”. While a young girl, she had the opportunity to let her dad know that she “got religion”. Since that day, Maggie has been praising God. In her spare time, Maggie kept busy with many hobbies. She loved working with her hands while doing activities like sewing and yard work. Her latest sewing project was making masks for others during the pandemic. She never missed the opportunity to shop at Goodwill, also fondly called “Burdines”. She was a giving person. Whenever there was a need, she was willing and contributed any way she could. Maggie loved to bake sweet potato pies for others. If you ever ate one, you were sure to come back for another. Her love for family contributed to her attending every family reunion.
