Obituary For James Garrett Hughley

James (Jimmy) Garrett Hughley was born on February 10, 1966 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Cora E. Session and Jerome G. Hughley.

Jimmy graduated from North Vigo High School and went on to serve in the United States Air Force. Upon returning from the Air Force, he continued his education at Indiana State University earning his bachelor’s degree. Jimmy then obtained his master’s degree in education at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Jimmy accepted Christ at a young age and became a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Terre Haute, Indiana. Upon answering the call to ministry, Jimmy served as the Youth Minister at St. John. He later moved to Louisville, Kentucky and united with Forest Baptist Church.

Jimmy has been married to Sherry Ann Hughley for the past 18 years and has spent his life devoted to her (his queen), their children, and grandchildren.

As a well-known supporter of public education, Jimmy worked as a teacher and union representative. He worked for the Jefferson County Teachers Association as Uniserv Director and was later promoted to Deputy Director. Jimmy left a lasting impact with every teacher, administrator, and staff alike. He genuinely believed in the mission and purpose of his work in furthering the goals of public education. His absence will be greatly felt as teachers have lost an amazing advocate and coworkers have lost an incredible friend.

Jimmy is preceded in death by his father, Jerome Hughley; grandmother, Corine Session; his son, Samuel Hughley; and his mother-in-law, Nancy Strong.

Jimmy received his heavenly wings June 9, 2020. He leaves to cherish and honor his memory his loving wife, Sherry (Ann); his children, Simone Hughley of Kansas City, MO, Isaac Hughley, of Jefferson City, MO, Jocelyn Hughley of Columbia, MO, Richard Tompkins, Jr. of Louisville, KY, and Terrell Tompkins of Indianapolis, IN. In addition to his children, his mother, Cora Session of Indianapolis, IN; siblings, Diana French of Indianapolis, IN, Steve Session (Jackie) of Houston, TX, Pamela Nolan of Indianapolis, IN, Darrell Hughley (Kimberly) of Athens, AL, and Lillian Hughley of Indianapolis, IN; eleven grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Jimmy’s memory will also be cherished by his closest and dearest friend, Pastor Derick Wakefield
