Obituary For Frank Powell, Jr.

Frank Powell Jr., 70 completed his earthy journey Wednesday, June 24, 2020 as he lived, quietly at home after a battle with cancer. Born July 15, 1949 to the late Frank Powell Sr. and Ethel Ellis Powell in Columbus County, NC.

Frank attended Westside High School where his academic excellence took him to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the age of 16 where he studied Botany. He spent several years helping to develop the Chapel Hill Botanical Gardens. While there, he made many friends and became a large part of the community. He remained the biggest Tar Heel fan ever until his death.

During his work career, Frank provided managerial and culinary skills to several Chapel Hill eateries. In additional to his work, he spent numerous hours helping others to understand and prepare their income taxes and other financial documents.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 41 years, Forsythia Griffin Powell, daughter: Franchesca Gantt (Dennis), son: Dr. Frederick G. Powell (Latoya), three grandchildren: AJ Powell, Zuri Powell and Zoe Powell, sister: Anita L. Powell, brother: Steve Powell (Wanda), sister in laws: Sophronia Qualls, Daneal Qualls-Holston (Kirk), nieces: Kelli Powell, Sydney Foster and Kirsten Holston, nephew: Ericc Powell, aunt: Doris Malone, uncle: Kenneth Ellis (Vivian), cousin: Vondia Colette Malone and a special lifelong friend Walter Malloy and many others.

The measure of any man is how he is remembered. Frank will be remembered as the best husband, father, brother and friend anyone could have. He loved his family and they loved him. He was a simple man that found great joy gathering with family and friends over a delicious home cooked meal.

A celebration of his life will take place on his birthday July 15th, 2020, where the family will have a private service at their home. Afterwards, the family ask family and friends to stop by between 3-6; keeping all safe by following COVID-19 safety guidelines (mask required for house entrance).

To our family and friends, we are overwhelmed and very appreciative of the many acts of kindness you have shown us during our loss. We love each of you and ask God to continue to bless you and your families.
