Barbara Ruth Washington passed away peacefully on Friday August 14, 2020, at Beacon Place Hospice. Her funeral will be held 12:00PM on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at Woodard Funeral Home Chapel, with visitations starting 1hour prior to the service.

She was born on March 21, 1938 in Candor, NC to the late James and Iola (Carter) Ratliff. She attended and graduated from Peabody High School in Troy NC. After graduating, she moved to Greensboro, and gained employment at Moses Cone Hospital, where she met her husband of 62 years, Joshua Washington, with whom she shared two children; Joshua Jr. and Kimberly.

While being a devoted mother and wife, she also attended GTCC for secretarial science, and acquired a position at Desoto Paint Company as secretary to the plant manager. She was a member of Power House of Deliverance, where she was president of the “Willing Workers", as well as a member of the usher board. After retiring from Desoto, she returned to school for Nursing Assistant Certification, which she continued to care for others doing private duty for 18 years.

Her love of travel sent her marry places. Among those, Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, and many cities across the US. With her social spirit and contagious personality, she easily made friends wherever she went.

In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Joshua Washington Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two children: son, Joshua Washington Jr. (wife, Cynthia); daughter, Kimberly Neely (husband, Michael); grandchildren, Echo Frye, Ivy Mack and Michael Neely Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Azure Frye and Lonnie Cooper Jr.

Woodard Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

You are so missed. You were a second mom to me. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to take care of you just as you took care of me. Thank you. Although it's difficult, I know you're home now, safe and in no pain, remembering the great days. Please give Papa Josh a hug for me. I love you both. Earth will never be the same, without you.

Barbara and I shared many laughes and I have so many fond memories of her. We always worked together on church projects. She was a great leader and organizer. She had a beautiful laugh and she laughed often and if you were around, you laughed also. She enjoyed her life and loved her family. RIP my friend. Sylvia M. BOWDEN
