MR. JOSEPH HENRY WALKER, affectionately called “Joe,” the third son born to the late Ardell, Sr. and the late Lorraine Lambert Walker, on February 3, 1949 in Henderson, NC. He departed this life August 13, 2020 in North Chesterfield, VA in the loving care of his daughter, LaVater, a dedicated, courageous caregiver, whom he called his advisor, and his devoted nephew- “Boone”, aided in taking excellent care of him from the beginning. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Annie Walker. Joe attended school in Victoria, Lunenburg County, VA where he lived, worked, married Stella M. Jennings and started his family until he moved to Baltimore, MD. There he pursued a career as a real estate investor, landlord and small business owner. Always the ambitious, hardworking, brilliant businessman, he became very successful. He continued to work hard until his health began to fail in 2013. After a few more years in Baltimore, he decided to retire and in 2015 he moved back to Virginia where he settled in North Chesterfield. Although his physical health was declining, his mind was as sharp as ever. He was full of wisdom and wit and always had a “good” joke. He kept everyone around him in “check.” Even after retiring from strenuous work he continued to use his lifelong skill and knowledge at his new home in North Chesterfield. He enjoyed gardening, yardwork, cutting and burning firewood and, boy, could he burn firewood. The more he had, the more he burned. He also enjoyed fishing, watching old westerns (especially Gun smoke) and spending time with family. He was a jack of all trades. He was always working or doing something to keep busy. One of the proudest moments of his life was becoming a “Grandfather.” He was the doting grandfather of his only grandchild, Shamar. He spent as much time as he could with him. He enjoyed mentoring Shamar while fishing, riding home from school and engaging in their favorite pastime—eating particularly at “Subway.” He was very involved in Shamar’s education, all sports events from kindergarten through his college years. He was blessed to be able to celebrate Shamar’s college graduation and to witness him following in his entrepreneurial footsteps by starting his own business. Joe leaves to cherish his memory Stella Walker, who stuck by him during his time of illness and their children- LaVater Walker, Richmond, VA; Phillip and Lanette Walker of Baltimore, MD; his grandchild- Shamar Shanks, Baltimore, MD; sister-Dorothy W. Hatchett, Victoria, VA; brothers- Ardell (Joyce) Walker, Jr., Victoria, VA and Edward Daniel (Edwina) Walker, Sr., Kenbridge, VA; nieces- Lisa, Linda, and Joyce Walker; nephews- Daniel Jr., and Isaiah Walker (Zeke); Dexter and Gregory Hatchett; great-nieces and great nephew- Layla Gravely-Hatchett; Olivia and Tyler Billups whom had a special place in Joe’s heart and who also referred to him as “Grandpop” and a host of in-laws, cousins and friends.
