SL “Scrap Iron” Daniels October 6, 1944~August 17, 2020

“A page turned….A chapter ended…..A life well lived…A rest earned” We were graced with the presence of SL “Scrap Iron” Daniels” for 75 years before God called him home to rest. SL was born on October 6, 1944, to the late Hollis and Wineva Daniels. He was born in Walthall County, as the third son of four siblings.

SL moved his family to Marion County during his youth and was reared in Foxworth, Mississippi community where he attended public school at Lampton Vocational School. As a child he idolized and shadowed his older brothers Linell and Vernell.

SL accepted Jesus Christ as his savior in his latter years and became a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Foxworth, Mississippi.

SL was blessed with his first son, Kenny, in 1962. A few years later he met and married the late Marva Collins where one child was born, Stacy. Several years later he united in holy matrimony with Gennett Varnado. To this union, they were blessed with four children: Natalie, Derek, Eric, and Kristy.

SL established Daniels Construction Company around 1964. While maintain his company, he went to work at CRC Mallard Drilling Company as one of the first wave of Blacks to work in the oil Industry as a part of the segregation law. He later transferred to Hess Oil Company, and later to Dual/Ensco Drilling Company, where he worked for over 15 years. He retired from the Oilfield, where he worked for over 15 years. He retired from the Oilfield and began working for Marion County Beat 3 Supervisor. Upon retirement he began living his “best life” which included one of his favorite past times of riding through the community of Foxworth visiting friends, family, and enjoying the scenery.

SL always had a passion for automobiles, tailor-made clothing, shooting pool, hunting wildlife, watching western movies, and sports (particularly baseball). He was a talented baseball player and was one of the original team members of the Foxworth Red Tops. He was a man of wisdom and had multiple talents and skills. He was best known for his direct opinion and if you asked a question, expect the truth, no matter who you were. Otherwise, he was quiet and reserved. In the last few years, he and his younger brother, Flozell, continued their bonded relationship as brothers after the passing of their older brothers.

On, August 17, 2020, SL was called to his heavenly home after taking his evening drive from Billy Wayne Jefferson’s home, where they met on a daily basis, just to shoot the breeze. In eternal rest, he joins his brothers, Linell and Vernell Daniels.

SL leaves to cherish his fond memories; six children, Kenny Jackson of Chicago, Illinois, Natalie (Wilfred) Moss of Fort Worth, Texas, Stacy (Lynn) Daniels of Petal, Mississippi, Derek G.
