In thinking about Freeman, I remember what a kind person he was...and humble. He loved being a photographer. He was a good one... kind, funny, talented and had a hobby (music) outside the darkroom. Peace, friend. (Kathleen Barry, former Tennessean photographer)

There were so many facets to Freeman - photographer, musician, father, husband, grandfather, friend, school bus driver... He had the calmest, most soothing voice. (Mike DuBose, former photographer, The Tennessean photo staff)

What a great man. He was so kind to me when I moved here in early 1990. Even though we worked for different newspapers he would always go out of his way to help me. (Ed Rode)

Freeman was extra special to me as a friend and mentor at The Tennessean. (George Walker, The Tennessean photo staff)

I remember Freeman's love of shooting sports, especially college and high school football. He didn't travel often. I recall a drive to Memphis when we talked about music and photography. He shared how he used a microscope during his studio days to inspect every groove in a recording master. Before records were pressed in vinyl, he would erase microscopic bumps in the master with a tiny file to prevent pops and clicks. He loved working with lights in the studio for that signature Freeman Ramsey portrait style. He loved his children and grandchildren. He will be missed. (Rex Perry, The Tennessean photo staff)

Freeman was a great man, so much fun to work with. (Peyton Hoge, The Tennessean photo staff)

Since hearing of Freeman's passing I have been fondly recalling memories of the man I knew him to be. Freeman and I were both children of the 40's growing up in entirely different worlds but with loving parents who worked tirelessly to raise their children in post WWII America. Freeman often told me of his mother's efforts to provide everything that she could to give him a loving home. Freeman and I shared a passion for old classic movies, he loved cowboy films (Sunset Carson, Lash Larue, and of course early John Wayne) and I loved the really bad old horror flicks. We also loved the music of our childhood and he would often challenge me with the lyrics and R&B performers of the 50's and 60's. He played the trumpet and quite well. I am sure fellow photographers, Mike and Rick, will remember our historic trip to Birmingham for the Tennessee vs Alabama game which was scheduled to be a special section. We transmitted almost 100 pictures of the game from every angle but it was relegated to only about 6 photos when the Vols blew the lead in the final minutes of the game. Also let us not forget our memorable dinner at a famous Bama steakhouse for their legendary "Steer Butt." Wonderful experience! Rest peacefully dear friend. Sam Parrish (The Tennessean photo staff)

I remember Freeman talking about growing up off Charlotte Avenue near downtown. He recalled, with great pride, what a great childhood he had there. It was a supportive community with families who would intermingle and watch out for one another. Freeman always embodied that kind of warmth. Nancy Rhoda (The Tennessean photo staff)

Freeman was the most beautiful soul I was ever honored to work with. Kind and so giving. The world has lost a beautiful person but Heaven has gained an angel and the sky a brilliant star. Callie Shell
