Obituary For Mamie Lee Holmes Byrd

The funeral services for the late Mrs. Mamie Byrd of 724 W. Monroe Street, Ashburn, Georgia, who departed this life on Monday, September 21, 2020 at Tifton Health and Rehabilitation Center in Tifton, Georgia, will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. from the Westview Memorial Cemetery in Ashburn, Georgia. Words of Comfort will be given by Pastor Marvin Cuffie. Services will be streamed Facebook Live from the "Shipps Funeral Home" Facebook page.

Mrs. Mamie Lee Holmes Byrd was born on August 12, 1926 in Ashburn, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard and Susan Holmes.

Mamie had little formal education; however she attended school in the old Friendship Baptist Church, formerly known as the “Old Zip” Church.

In approximately 1940, Mamie accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined The Old Zip Church. She was a dutiful and faithful church member.

Around the year 1944, Mamie was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Dewey Byrd, Sr. To this union, six children were born. Mamie was a devoted mother to her children, and always wanted the best for them.

On Monday, September 21, 2020, Mamie heeded the Master’s Call to come and take her Eternal Rest. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Susan Holmes, two sons, Dewey Byrd, Jr., Major Byrd, four siblings, Dooly Holmes, Albert Holmes, Richard Holmes, Eudora Byrd.

Mamie leaves to cherish her memories her children, Louise Collier, Willie C. (Eloise) Byrd, Evelyn (Samuel) Edmondson, Richard (Katrina) Byrd, all of Ashburn, Georgia; thirty grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Daisy Byrd of Ashburn, Georgia, Louise Byrd of Albany, Georgia; two siblings, Preston Holmes of Ashburn, Georgia, and Carrie Spears of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends.
