Obituary For Sylvester Brown

Sylvester Brevard Brown age 79, answered the call from Heaven and departed this life on Thursday, September 24, 2020, joining his sons, Ivan Sylvester and Pernell Dilbert, as well as his oldest sister, Marie Ann. During his transition, he was surrounded by the love and support of his family. Sylvester was born in Mecklenburg County on July 4, 1941 to the late Rev. Samuel Boyce Brown and the late Laura Alexander Brown. He was deeply devoted to his family, church and service to others. Sylvester graduated from Torrence Lytle High School in 1959. In 1980 he was united in Holy matrimony to Annie Sherrill Emehel, whom he adored. Keeping to his vow to honor and keep her in sickness and in health, Sylvester was an extraordinary husband, who modeled love God’s way. They were married for 40 years. Sylvester gave his life to Christ at an early age. He was a faithful, devoted Elder at New Friendship Presbyterian Church, where throughout the years, he sang in the men’s choir; served on the usher board; served on the board of directors for the afterschool tutoring/enrichment program and drove the church van to pick up children for Sunday School and worship services. He was a career employee at Mac Steele (formerly Edgcombe Metals) for 47 years before, retiring as a supervisor. As an entrepreneur, he owned B&S Janitorial Service in the early 80’s. However, his heart found its way to doing what he loved most—farming and owning various livestock such as beef cattle and hogs. His gift of giving and helping others reflected through his work with The Society of St. Andrew, a gleaning organization, who provides produce to local communities in surrounding counties. Sylvester helped to make a difference to end hunger by gleaning produce from the fields and delivering food to families, soup kitchens, churches, as well as refugee camps. He loved canning vegetables, making homemade ice cream, entertaining family (especially his grandchildren) and cooking gourmet meals. As a gifted encourager, he always spoke highly of his children and grandchildren and encouraged them to excel in life. He leaves behind, a legacy to cherish his memory: His loving wife: Annie Emehel Brown, Four sons: Perry Brevard Brown of Charlotte NC, Clement (Shawana) Emehel of Burlington NC, Johneric (Toni) Emehel of Charlotte NC and Terry Emehel of Denver NC; Nine grandchildren: Tressica Wallace, Jessica (Theodore) Wallace, Paris Brown, Xavier Brown, Chloe Emehel, Bryson Emehel, Madison Emehel, Morgan Emehel and Grace Emehel. Three great grandchildren: Isaiah Wallace, Brie Wallace and Langston Wallace. Two sisters: Sarah Brown Adams of St. Charles MD and Helen Brown Rivers of Huntersville NC. My most memorable memories Mr. Sylvester Brown was if something needed to be done in, out or around our home church Mr. Brown along with our Heavenly Father made sure it got completed. Mr. Brown dedication on the men's choir, building fund committee, usher, feeding the communities as an Elder at some point at our church, Mr. Brown stood for what was right. There's so much more I could say about "Vest" how he and Mr. Westmoreland truly worked as a team with Mr. Johnson, Craven Jetton Dale Patterson and more. The last picture I took of our church was the beautiful new roof that Mr. S.Brown and crew had installed on small but Godly and dedicated church. Also Mr. S. Brown worked along with supporting the only Soup kitchen at our church for our communities. Mr.S. Will truly be missed with his knowledge of all grounds and areas of our church and his spirit will forever live still with us and our church. God our father thank you for the best times of New Friendship Presbyterian Church and our Mr. Sylvester Brown in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

To the family, I am sorry for your loss. Mr.B was a great man of honor and respect. We've enjoyed attending family functions, beach vacations, and over all just breaking bread with you. We were saddened to hear of your battle yet; we found rest in knowing that he's won the fight. Rest well Mr. B. You've left your footprints here on earth, now; you are walking on the streets of gold and sleeping in the arms of Jesus Christ. Well done Sir. God Bless. Family, we are praying for your peace and comfort. Much love to each and every one of you. Sincerely, Lisa Edmond and Family

Sylvester Brown will be remembered by my brothers and sisters and myself as being a honorable, thoughtful, gentle and wise man. Sylvester was soft spoken and lead by his actions. I personally learned so much by watching how Sylvester spoke and interacted with the people around him. He was always smiling and laughing. He will be missed and may god bless his soul.
