Mrs. Elsie Adams Wingfield

North Augusta, SC— Mrs. Wingfield, 91, peacefully entered eternal rest October 6, 2020 at her home. Born on December 31, 1928 in Clover, SC to the late George and Carrie Adams. She became a North Augusta resident more than sixty years ago upon her marriage to the late Henry Edward Wingfield in 1952.

Mrs. Wingfield obtained science and education degrees from Claflin, South Carolina State and North Carolina Central University. She taught high school science for 35 years in school systems in Barnwell, Edgefield, Saluda and Aiken counties.

Immediately following her retirement, she volunteered for several years with Aiken County Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program and the Anna Maria Nursing home. She was an active member in the National Education Association, and later the Retired Teachers Association. While no longer active, she was a member of the Eta Theta Zeta chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority.

A true woman of faith, she worked diligently in various ministries at the Carpentersville Baptist Church, including Sunday School, The Thomas Brown Choir, the Deaconess Ministry, the Joy Ministry, Mentoring Ministry, the Christian Women’s Alliance ministry, and the Susie Stephens Young Peoples Church.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, siblings, Mabel (Johnny) Stewart, Mary (Frederick) Adderley, sister-in-law Thelma (Philip) Watson, brother in law Walter (Florence) Strong and granddaughter Erica Truesdale.

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, Thelma Diane (Grady) Truesdale and Henrietta Marie (George) Wingfield-Jones. Grandchildren Krystal Marie (Jason) Anderson, Eles Jones, Jadon Jones, and great-granddaughter, Kelsey and Lauren Marie Anderson; foster brother/cousin Rev. James (Shirley) Woody, sister-in-Law, Georgene Wingfield Crawford, brother-in-law, John (Frances) Wingfield; Cousins, Norma Dunlap, Julia Brown, Leroy (Renee) Brown, Danita (Lewis) White, Markeya (Jeremy) Smith. Devoted caretakers, Maggie Brown, Ida Quiller, Geraldine Williams. The children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of her cherished neighbor, the late Mrs. Armelia Stephens Lamback, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Mrs. Wingfield was a part of our family in Carpentersville. My Grandparents lived at 403 Hamburg Road Mr. Daniel E. Smith and Mrs. Hattie Pearl Smith.
