Obituary For Mother Alberta "Bert" Mitchell

~OBITUARY~

Alberta (Alice Gardner) Mitchell is one of seven children born to the late Bridie Gardner and Rosina Risher , on March 9, 1929, in Gifford, South Carolina. All her siblings are predeceased, yet the Lord chose to call her onto glory from this life on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at 8:16 A.M. at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. She was affectionately known by family and friends by her nickname "Momma Bert." In her later years as a family and community matriarch, she was referred to as "Aunt Bert" or "Momma Bert." In February of 1946, she married the late Eddie Mitchell of Estill, South Carolina, and out of this union four children were birth.

Alberta and Eddie Mitchell came up north to New York City in 1949 to settle and work after a brief stop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Upon finally settling in Brooklyn, New York she gained employment at a women's apparel blouse company of which she worked for 10 years and then followed that by working for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as one of their most trusted and top-tiered in-house messengers for 25 years 'til retirement in February of 1995.

A devout Christian during her youth and all throughout her young adulthood, Alberta was a member of St. Peter's A.M.E. Church in Gifford, South Carolina until she left years later to come to Brooklyn, New York. It is there she joined Bridge Street A.M.E. Church in 1952, and became a member of the Helping Hand Club of which she served diligently.

Alberta was known for her class, etiquette, and style, coupled with a larger than life personality, of which she was actually that...being 5 feet 10 inches and all. Always the encourager, always the giver, always the one to give a word of wisdom and comfort, for she was known and respected as the neighborhood "Momma." Yet, with that, she had no problem speaking her mind and being quite fussy when upset because of a wrong. However, she was so full of life and hard to pin down. Just a lover of people. One of her greatest pastimes was traveling abroad and attending festivals, spending time with family in distant states (especially family reunions), going to the casinos in Atlantic City, and Queens, New York, and watching her game shows when home. Most of all though, she was a true worshipper and servant of our Lord Jesus The Christ and loved talking about how good he is.

In addition, to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by one son; Eddie Mitchell, Jr., who passed away in 1954.

She leaves to cherish her memory; (3) Children; Alexander Gregory Mitchell; Pooler, GA., Anthony "Tony" Mitchell, Brooklyn, NY, Ruby Jones, Pooler, GA; (5) Grandchildren; Yolanda Jones Darden, Danbury, CT, Lisa Jones, Pooler, GA, Markeith Williams, Aiken, SC, Kelvin Williams, Fairfax, SC, Lisa Williams, Allendale, SC, (1) Son and Grand-daughter by marriage; Joe Louis "Lucky" Williams, Allendale, SC, and Jeanette Aiken, Dillon, SC, (8) Nieces; Gianna Gardner, Columbia, SC, Adrienne Chesney, New Jersey, Jackie Watson, Delaware, Denise Gardner, Philadelphia, PA, Stephanie Holmes, Philadelphia, PA, Sarah Gardner, Brooklyn, NY, (3) Nephews; Charles Gardner, Brooklyn, NY, Gregory Gardner, Brooklyn, NY, Tony Gardner, Philadelphia, PA. A host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
