Herbert Hoover Alston, 89, of Greensboro, NC, passed away on May 25,2018. Herbert was born in Greensboro, NC on March 7, 1929 to Robert and Ida Alston. Herbert attended St. Mary’s Catholic School where he completed the 10th grade. Herbert was married to Thelma Hannah Hayes on June 20,1948; they were married for 70 years. Herbert worked as a custodian for Hunter Elementary school for 20 years before retiring in 1993. He enjoyed working in his yard, daily. He also enjoyed watching wrestling with his great-grandson, Xavier. Herbert is survived by his loving wife, Thelma, his children: Patricia Alston, Virginia Sturdivant (Donnie), Betty Jean Williamson, Denise Alston, and Timothy Alston all of Greensboro, NC. Sharon Alston of Butner, NC. Teresa Wright (Pathetty), Keith Chapman (Alicia), and Eric Chapman (Tanisha) all of Newberry, SC. along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other family members and friends. Herbert is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ida Alston, Brothers, Wesley Alston, Preston Alston, Henry Alston and Robert Alston Jr. Sisters: Maggie Roberts, Christine King and Ida Banks. Son: Herbert Hoover Alston, Jr. Daughter: Thelma Alston and granddaughter Juanita La Vern Cauthen.

A service honoring his life will be held Friday, June 1, 2018 at St. James Baptist Church; 536 W. Florida St, Greensboro, NC. The visitation will begin at 12:30 pm and the service will follow at 1 pm. The interment will take place following the service at Lakeview Memorial Park; 3600 N O'Henry Blvd, Greensboro, NC.
