Obituary

Mrs. Elnora Smith Oliver, 75, affectionately known as “Tootie”, was called home to God on Friday, October 9, 2020, at the VCU-CMH Hospital in South Hill, VA. She was born on January 23, 1945, in Bracey, VA, to the late Mary Etta and William Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Oliver Sr., their youngest son, Frank Oliver Sr., and a stepdaughter, Viola Oliver; three sisters – Hattie Mae Stigall, Catherine Smith Woodfolk, and Dorothy Smith Crute, and two brothers – Joe and James Smith. Tootie was a member of Union Hill RZUA Church in Baskerville, VA and attended until her health failed. Over the years, she worked in the tobacco industry, as a cook in the Twin Lake Restaurant in South Hill, as housekeeper and nanny, and at the Mecklenburg House.

Tootie was a joyous, uplifting, and sweet person and always had a smile and laugh to share and sometimes made you laugh until you cry. Her passions were cooking, fishing, planting flowers, and vegetable gardens. Her favorite sayings were “If God is willing” and "Live and nothing happens.” She was an inspiration to us all, and we will greatly miss her.

Tootie leaves to cherish her memory three sons – Walter (Zelma) Smith, James Albert Oliver, Jr., “Jew” and Tony Oliver of South Hill, VA; a stepdaughter – Nannie Brown of South Hill, VA; four stepsons – Richard Oliver of South Hill, VA and James, Charles, and Elijah Oliver of Richmond, VA; seven grandchildren – Jermaine and Shawnmell Smith, Jamar Oliver, and Kayla Hawthorne of South Hill, VA, Anika Holmes of Danville, VA, Candace McKnight of Baltimore, MD, and Frank Oliver, Jr., of Greensboro, NC; four great-grandchildren – Colby and Kayden Deshazo of Danville, VA, Naevaughn Henry Charles of South Hill, VA, and Jaiden Oliver of Greensboro, NC; one brother – Johnny (Mary) Smith of LaCrosse, VA; a sister-in-law – Nancy Gregory of Union Level, VA; three brothers-in-law – Charles Oliver of Frisco, TX, Jack House, Jr., of Summerville, SC, and John Thomas of Skipwith, VA; two dedicated nieces – D. Marie (Lee) Morris of Charlottesville, VA, and Barbara (Sargent) Roby of South Hill, VA; a close friend, Janosco Skipwith, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

“And he said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23
