Virgil attended Shawtown Elementary School until the family moved to Greensboro, there his education continued at Lincoln Middle School as well as Dudley High School and from there enlisted into the United States Army. Virgil was a member of Lillington Grove Free Will Baptist Church where he attended church school and sang in the children’s chorus. He attended St James Baptist Church in Greensboro. Virgil spent several years in Yonkers New York as an adult and joined Grace Baptist Church. He continued church school studies and worship services there.
Virgil spent the majority of his work experience as a Master Mason in his father’s brick and block company, Virgil Smith and Sons Construction in Greensboro, NC, one of the first black owned construction companies in Greensboro, NC. Virgil’s expert handy work can been seen in several buildings around town. In 1978 Virgil met the late Linda Gail Neal “Tweety” and would raise three children together. Virgil and Linda would share their unique and adventurous bond for thirty years before Linda gained her wings. Virgil was a laid back man that was never seen ruffled or angry and the “King” of one liners which many would come to remember. He would always say that he was “one fine piece of leather well put together”. He was very proud of his children and Grandchildren and spending time with his family was very important to him. Virgil enjoyed nature and also believed that “Big Foot” is alive and well. He has seen about every National Geographic episode and Western. Virgil was well respected and loved by all who encountered him. He was selfless, hardworking, dependable, and honorable. He was witty, smart, and loved to put a smile on faces, which is a trait that he has passed to his children.
Virgil leaves to cherish his memory, his mother Gloria Smith, his children Sherrie Neal Jones (Leonardo “Lennie” Jones), Virgil Anthony Neal Sr. (Joy Neal), Adrian Raphael Neal, brother Marlon Smith, grandsons Virgil Anthony Neal Jr., Vaughn Anderson Neal, Tyreek LaShawn Neal, Leonardo Jovan Jones II (“LJ”), and Adrian Raphael Neal Jr. (AJ), nephews Miguel Smith and Brandon Bennett. He is predeceased by his father Virgil Anthony Smith Sr., wife Linda G. Neal, his brother Michael Smith, and sister QuoVadis Smith.
A public viewing will be held in the Cassie Coote-Brown Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 from 2pm-5pm. A private chapel service honoring his life will be held Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the Cassie Coote-Brown Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home.
