Monica Lorraine Sewell, daughter of the late Carl Fitzgerald and Marie Sewell Hatcher, born on January 23, 1960 in Orange, NJ, departed this life on October 16, 2020 in Florence, SC. Monica was the eldest of five children; two brothers Vincent Sewell and Darren Hatcher, who preceded her in death.
Monica was educated in the Orange Public School System. She went on to study Business at Seton Hall University and Physical Education at Essex County College. Monica was employed with two insurance companies before finding her place supporting law enforcement as a Communications Officer with the Orange Police Department and a Police Dispatcher for the South Orange Police Department. She was serious about her service and was also certified in the following disciplines; 9-1-1 NECI, Homeland Security I.C.E., and as a member of the Domestic Violence Response Team.
Monica was nicknamed “Monk” but affectionately known as “Mo”. She loved music from an early age and was always singing and dancing. Monica loved attending concerts, enjoyed being outdoors and never missed a good cookout. Monica later moved to Columbia, SC in December of 2019 to be closer to her beautiful granddaughter Nia.
Monica leaves to cherish her memories two children, Justin Sewell and Sharief Mills, one granddaughter Nia Gabrielle Sewell, two sisters Regina Sewell and Rose Hatcher, three nephews Basim Sewell, Kevin Hatcher-Puryear and Ahmad Gusemalseed, three nieces Tashia Sewell, Basimah Sewell and Kiara Sewell, seven great nieces, and a host of other family and friends.
