William Henry Wilson, III, AKA “Billy” AKA “Lil Shack”, son of the late William “Chicken Shack” and Kathryn A. Wilson, was born on June 19, 1963, in Tallahassee, FL. He became a Christian early in life and was baptized at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church. He later transferred his membership to Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wabasso, FL. Where he served as Church School Superintendent, a member of the Steward Board and Choir.

Billy attended Vero Beach High School and graduated in the class of 1981. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Florida A&M University and Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. During his matriculation at FAMU he earned numerous awards.

Some of which include the Jake Gaither Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship, FAMU Scholarship Award, and the Most Valuable Player Award in the Florida Classic in 1985.

Billy was also recognized early in his professional career as an outstanding leaderin the Indian River County School District. He was a teacher, track and football coach and assigned as the Dean of Students at Vero Beach High School. He was promoted to Assistant Principal of Sebastian River High School in 1994.

As a young athlete Billy played basketball, football, track & field, baseball, and was on the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) swim team, where he held the State record for the butterfly stroke at the age of 10. He always possessed a passion for athletics and impacting the lives of young people. This passion lead him to become involved in the counties recreation program where he volunteered and coached little league baseball, football, soccer, and basketball. Because of his keen interest in athletics he was instrumental in establishing the first AAU basketball team in Indian River County “Warriors”. He was head coach of the team for several year leading them to numerous tournaments championships and two State Championship titles. In addition, he was an assistant coach for the Track Florida Track Team and played a vital role in assisting many athletes in the development of their natural athletic abilities. Many of his former athletes took those talents and turned them into collegiate athletic scholarships. He continued to help young people in Indian River County by serving as a mentor at Citrus Elementary School for 5 years while simultaneously serving as a mentor to athletes at Sebastian River High School that were preparing for college.

Billy has received numerous awards and recognition including “Making a Difference in the Treasure Coast Community” award 2007 Treasure Coast Links. Exchange Club Student athlete of the Month 1980. First Team All Space Coast Conference. Jai Alai Treasure Coast Athlete of the Year 1980-81. First Team Class 4A “Wide Receiver”, Track and Field State finalist (330yd Intermediate Hurdles), Outstanding Achievement in Football award (FAMU), FAMU Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award. He was recruited by the University of Georgia, Southern University, Tennessee State and Florida A&M. He chose to receive a full ride offered by Florida A&M to follow in his father’s footsteps and signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 1986.

He is a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Phi Fraternity, Inc, Florida Athletic Coaches Association, Par5 Golf, NAACP, FAMU Varsity Football Club, and the Ft. Pierce Chapter of the Florida A&M Alumni association.

Billy was proceeded in death by his wife Teneshia R. Wilson and Father William H. Wilson, Jr. He is survived by two loving and devoted sons William, IV and Wesley (Jacksonville), Mother Kathryn A. Wilson (Vero Beach), Sister Yolanda W. Lucas (Vero Beach), and niece Brandi L. Lucas (Gainesville) and a host of relatives and friends.

A Visitation for William H. Wilson, III will be held from 5:30 - 7:30on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Pathway Church, 1105 58th Ave, Vero Beach, Florida 32966. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Sebastian River High School Auditorium, 9001 Shark Blvd, Sebastian, FL 32958.
