Sister Helen was born in Stoneville, North Carolina to the late Payton and Hattie Parker Scales. She departed this life on October 29, 2020. Helen was a caring and supportive mother, sister, aunt, and a friend to all who knew her. She was educated in the public schools of Rockingham County, and graduated from Charles Drew High School in Madison, North Carolina as the valedictorian of her class. Additionally, she attended Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospital School of Nursing in Winston-Salem, NC where she was trained and certified as a Registered Nurse. As a registered nurse, Helen served her patients with care and compassion. She worked at various health organizations including Cone, “old” L. Richardson and Saint James Nursing Home. She was always willing to serve where she was needed, and also worked at a Day Care Center because she had a love for children.
Helen was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Charlie Levern Mahoney on November 8, 1969. To this union one daughter, Angela, was born. Helen was very active in her community. She was one of the activists who marched and fought for integration in Greensboro, North Carolina, and her name is commemorated in the International Civil Rights Museum here in Greensboro for taking a stand against segregation. She loved the Lord. Helen joined Sharon Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She later joined Shiloh Baptist Church while in Greensboro where she served as an active and faithful member. She was a member of several ministries. However, Helen enjoyed serving as a proud member of the Roy Lee Phillips Fellowship Club. She really liked serving and helping to prepare meals for the Laymen’s League as well as serving for special occasions. Helen loved her family and loved cooking. She received joy in ensuring people had a good meal. She especially loved cooking and serving people at family gatherings, and for North Carolina A & T’s Homecoming where she would make sure all who came to her house, regardless of the time, had a plate to eat and had a plate to take home if they wished. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Robert Watkins, Henry Watkins, Herman Scales, Marion Dalton, Dan Andrew Scales and Alberta Ziglar.
She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter; Angela L. Mahoney of Greensboro, North Carolina, brother James (Gen) Scales of Stoneville, North Carolina; Sister Mary Alice Scales Mention of Stoneville, North Carolina. Sister-in-law Alberta Watkins of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
