Charlotte Addie West Melton, 90, of Glen Allen, VA entered into eternal rest on Friday, November 13, 2020. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 60 years, James R. Melton, Sr. and her parents, Clifford and Charlotte West. She is survived by her daughter, Linda R. Melton (William, devoted friend); son, James R. Melton, Jr. (Lisa); grandchildren, James R. Melton III (Julia, partner) and Brittany D. Melton; great grandson, James R. Melton IV; sister, Dorothy May West; nieces and nephews, Ruth Quarles (William), Jacqueline Simmons (Harry), Dr. James H. Bowles, Jr. (Belinda), Ira West (Dr. Gladys West), Dr. Melton R. Jones (Nellie) and a host of cousins, friends and neighbors. Charlotte Addie grew up in Chesterfield County, VA. She was a 1946 graduate of D. Webster Davis High School, Ettrick, VA and Virginia State College (University) 1950 and 1976. While at Virginia State College (University), she pledged Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. For thirty-nine years she pursued her career in public education throughout the state of Virginia in the counties of Pittsylvania, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Henrico and the City of Charlottesville; retiring from Henrico County Public Schools in 1989 as the Principal of Laburnum Elementary School. Her passions included gardening, fishing, farming and working with community activities, frequently as a volunteer. With a group of devoted and committed friends, she coordinated the first ever African American Pavilion in Heritage Village-State Fair of Virginia. She was an active member of St. Peter Baptist Church Senior Ministry and the Floral and Decorating Ministry. She volunteered with the Henrico Christmas Mother Council and served as the 2000 Henrico Christmas Mother and continued to devote many hours of service to the council. With a fantastic group of ladies, she quilted and crocheted for worthy causes. In addition, Charlotte served on the Historical Preservation Advisory Committee in Henrico County, calling to public attention many events, individuals, groups and landmarks making historical contributions to the county. Her remains rest at Scott’s Funeral Home,115 East Brookland Park Boulevard, where walk through viewing will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2020 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and Friday, November 20, 2020 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. A celebration of her life with friends and family will be held outside in the parking lot of St. Peter Baptist Church on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 12:00 pm. Per the request of the family, please remain in your vehicle and observe all COVID-19 guidelines.
