The Obituary

Mary Davis Spencer was born in Quitman, GA on May 5, 1931 to the late Jim and Ennie Ebenezer Davis. She was one of eight children born of this union. Mary matriculated through the Brooks County Public School System. Mary married the love of her life, Wallace Spencer Sr., on December 9, 1950. To their union, eight children were born: Eddie, Johnny, Wallace, Joyce, Michael, Stephen, Merrill & Rodriguez. In her professional career, Mary touched the lives of countless students by serving in the capacity of a nutritional specialist at Walker Street School. Mary and her lifelong friend, Mrs. Maime Essex, were known for cooking up delicious meals daily. There was one thing you could count on at Walker Street; and that was a good meal! Mary was a faithful member and servant of Christ at Elam Missionary Baptist Church for many years under the leadership of Pastor Rob Phillips. She served as a member of the senior choir as well as the culinary committee. Much like her professional attributes, Mary impacted many in the community through her love of cooking homemade cakes, dressing, mac and cheese and so much more. Mary was an integral part of Brooks County’s “I Need Help Program,” along with her lifelong friends (Eloise Stokes and George Phillips). This committee was responsible for servicing hundreds of displaced and downtrodden families in our community. Later in life, Mary became a member and served at Bethany Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Sibley Matchett. Mary was a woman of many talents. Her love for cooking showed in her personal and professional endeavors. Another one of her specialties was straightening, pressing and curling hair. Hairdressing was a God-given gift as she was self-taught. She also had a great eye for fashion and could put together fabulous outfits with a hat, purse, and shoes to match. She was a powerhouse in the community. Mary was preceded in death by both parents (Jim and Ennie), her son (Stephen), her siblings (Alice Spencer, Lessie May Seymore, Martha Alexander, Aretha Sheppard, William Davis, James Davis, and Freddie Lee Davis Sr.), and daughter-in-law (Helen). Mrs. Mary Davis Spencer leaves her husband of seventy years, Mr. Wallace Spencer Sr., to celebrate her life and legacy. She also leaves her children: Eddie Lee (Sonya), Johnny Lee (Helen-preceded in death), Wallace Spencer Jr. (Kara), Joyce Ann (John), Michael Leon, Stephen-preceded in death, Merrill Eugene, Rodriguez (Tanya) and Special Nieces: Lillian ‘Pam’ Newsome and Teresa Scruggs. And a beautiful lineage of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be Sunday, December 6, 2020 at 1PM. Visitation will be at the Stevens-McGhee Chapel from 3PM-6PM. Visit this website or our Stevens-McGhee Facebook page to view a livestream of the celebration.

Continue to keep the Spencer Family in your daily thoughts and prayers.
