Henry Hicks Jr.

Passed 12/07/2020

Henry Hicks, Jr., known to many he encountered as “HH” passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 7, 2020. Henry was the first child born to the loving union of the late Henry Sr. and Effie Grant Hicks. He was born and spent his ninety years of life here in Greensboro, NC.

Henry graduated from James B. Dudley High School in the class of 1948. During his days at Dudley High School he was very active in sports. He participated in Football and Basketball.

Henry spent most of his career in the clothing industry. He worked for many years at Greensboro Manufacturing Company as a Supervisor (which later became Levis Strauss Company). He also worked for The Hub LTD and Gordon’s Menswear for a number of years in sales. Henry was known for his sense of style as well as his aroma. He loved to wear a good cologne.

Henry married his loving wife Roxana Robbins on December 30, 1967. This year would have been their 53rd Wedding Anniversary.

Henry loved to listen to classic R&B music such as the Four Tops or The Temptations, watch western movies and television shows, and watch sports (especially the Carolina Panthers his favorite team). He played in several local African American “Negro” Basketball Leagues as well as served as a local referee for area sporting events.

His life was a living example of one of his favorite Bible verses, Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ”.

Henry leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Roxana, his children Iman Talib Abdur-Rashid, Babette Hicks-Hudson, Bruce Hicks, and Maria Hicks-Few (Lowell), his grandchildren Hawwa, Adam, and Madison Nicole. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters, Thurman Hicks (Jenny), Herman Hicks (Maxine), Alma Harris, and Geneva “Maxine” Gladney, a special niece, Kim that served as his caretaker, nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Henry Jr. was preceded in death by his late brothers Napoleon, Preston, Ronald, Willie, and Javan.

A public viewing will be held Monday, December 14, 2020 from 1pm-3pm in the Cassie Coote-Brown Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at Lakeview Memorial Park.
