Deaconess Martha Frances Jones, daughter of the late William Hilliard and the late Jennie Taylor Baskerville was born June 11, 1925 in Mecklenburg County, VA and departed this life December 7, 2020 in Sandston, VA on her 74th Wedding Anniversary date. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Harvey Jones and eldest son Harvey L. Jones; four brothers- Andrew and William Mumford Jones, James and Waverly Baskerville; four sisters- Grace Baskerville and a set of infant triplets.

Martha was reared by a village of relatives since her mother died when she was eleven years of age. She enjoyed going to school. She was a creative writer and graduated Salutatorian of her high school class at the Mecklenburg County Training School. Later in adulthood, she and her late husband became very active in their children’s PTA and sports. Her children, nieces, and nephews brought her much joy.

She was an active member of the Lombardy Grove Baptist Church. Her ministries included Mother of the Church, Deaconess, President of the Missionary Society, Senior Choir member, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Bluestone Harmony Association. Additionally, she was a member of the Household of Ruth #5430, South Hill, VA.

Martha enjoyed family gatherings and working outdoors, especially her vegetable and ornamental gardening. She also enjoyed and attended most of the forty-six Taylor Family Reunions. She loved baking and canning. She is known for her home-made rolls, coconut custard and sweet potato pies. Martha leaves to cherish her memory are her two daughters- Gloria (Joe) Murphy and Jennie (Joe) Sanders; son- Marshall (Joyce) Jones; daughter-in-law, Sherrie Jones and brother-in-law, Edward Cardwell; grandchildren- Joe T. (Catrina) Murphy, Sr., Leticia (Dwight) Bland, Anthony J. (Robin) Murphy, Markesha, Jennifer, Tiffany, and Courtney Jones, Anthony (Shelly) Dagner, and Gerald (Marjorie) Gregory; great-grandchildren: Isiah, Zaria, Joe, Jr., Joshua, Ashton, Nadia, Sherrod, Aaliyah, Kevin, and Greg, Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that monetary donations be sent to the Lombardy Grove Baptist Church Improvement Fund - P.O. Box 817 South Hill, VA 23970.
