Keith Anthony Smith, Sr., was born November 10, 1961, to the late Willie W. Smith and Christine T. Smith. Keith’s education was in the Atlanta and DeKalb public schools. He attended Archer High and graduated from The Great Southwest DeKalb High School as one of the first Blacks to segregate the school, where his athletic records still stand. After graduation, Keith enlisted and served in the United States Navy active duty for 4 years, as well as Reserves. He served as an Electrician Mate Fireman on the Navy Ship along-side the Navy SEALS. After returning to dry ground, Keith was a truck driver for many years. He loved driving his truck, always meeting people until his health forced him to retire. He had to choose trucking or quality time with his family. He definitely chose his family and did not look back. But he did not slow down! There was nowhere we could go that he did not know someone. No one was a stranger to him. He struck a conversation with anyone! Keith was loved by everyone! He was actively involved in church, sports, multiple schools throughout the area, as well the community. He was an amazing brother, son, nephew, uncle, neighbor, and devoted friend. Some who knew him from his younger days would even refer to him as “Skull-head” (if you know, you know). Growing up as a true Atlanta native in Perry Homes, he always had a way to make something out of nothing with his siblings, aunts, uncles, and best friends. Those times playing outside meant everything to him. He never forgot who he was or where he came from, and he instilled that in all of his children. He was a faithful band parent embracing each child individually with his love and guidance at the Great Redan High School. He was called by many children all around and band members- Mr. Smith, Mr. Keith, Dad, or just plain old “Pops”. Whether it was band events, football, basketball, baseball games, we were always there, well after our kids graduated high school. There was not a holiday that comes by that kids wouldn’t randomly drop by just to say hello, or even come over when returning from college break and hang out with us. Or even come over when they just needed a hug, kind word, guidance, or even serious discussions and advice of life experiences…our door is always open to them. A father figure to many………. He never met a stranger, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Keith was married for 31 years to his loving and devoted wife, Angela Smith. Their life was committed to raising their amazing 7 children whom was SUPER PROUD of all of them! They were inseparable, and always involved in their activities. We were co- youth directors, and he was also an ordained Deacon at Faith Missionary Baptist Church in the 1980’s. Shortly after marrying Angela, they committed their church home to Fairfield Baptist Church in 1989 being lifelong members. Cherishing and embracing his loving memories are, his loving and devoted wife, Angela Y. Smith; children, Keith, II, Kennon, Kevin, Kiandra, Kristopher, Kia, and Kendall; grandchildren, Keith, III and Keilani; mother, Christine T.
