Obituary For Mr. Roscoe Brown, Sr.

Roscoe Brown, Sr. was born on June 3, 1944 to the late Mr. James Brown & Mrs. Daisy Bell Brigham. He was the oldest of ten children and both of his parents preceded him in death. He made his transition from Earth to Heaven on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Augusta University Health following complications from COVID 19. He was educated in the Richmond County Public School System. After high school Roscoe went to work for Pepsi Cola and then was hired at Coca Cola. He was called into the U. S. Army and served until his mother had a stroke and he returned home to assist in her care. Coca Cola held his job for him, and he was able to return to work. Roscoe began his career loading trucks at night and moved up the ranks to Management. He held several positions, Truck Helper, Route Salesman, Route Supervisor, African American Market Management, Sales Manager in Charge of Operations and when he retired Roscoe was Sales Development Manager for the Eastern Region. He was the first and only African American in many of these positions. Being in these positions afforded him the opportunity to interact with the Augusta Community and Colleges. He also was awarded several opportunities to travel: Super Bowl XIX in San Francisco, California, a cruise to Alaska, and a trip to Nassau the Bahamas and Cancun. Mexico. He enjoyed his work with Coca-Cola and was loyal to the company. His family and friends could only drink coke products in his presence. Roscoe retired from Augusta Coca-Cola Bottling Company in August 2014 after 42 years of illustrious service. On June 8, 1974 Roscoe married the love of his life, Lucretia Parramore. To this union was borne one son, Roscoe “Rocky” Brown, II. Roscoe joined Trinity CME Church in 1976. Rev. Neal said that he should join the church before he got married. He joined Trinity in May 1974 and has been active since he joined. Roscoe was active at Trinity on served on the Steward Board, Trustee Board and as Trustee Board Chairman, Ministry to Men and as President of the Trinity Manor Board of Directors. He really enjoyed serving as a Doorkeeper in the House of the Lord. He was president of the Jeanette Kelly Usher Board for several years. Bishop Othal H. Lakey appointed Roscoe as Usher Board President of the Georgia North Region Annual Conference Usher Board. He was elected as a delegate to two General Conferences of the CME Church: 2010 – Mobile, Alabama and 2014 – Baltimore, Maryland. At Trinity he along with Roy Jones and Dr. George Nixon organized a Golf Ministry for young people and women. It really was supposed to be for the youth, but the ladies took over. It was a way to fellowship and learn a new sport. The golf teams took part in golf tournaments in Macon, GA and Augusta, GA. In the community Roscoe was a member of the CSRA Classic Board and worked with Paine College under the presidency of Dr. Shirley Lewis. He would present trophies and other gift items to the homecoming court at Lucy C. Laney High School. He would even visit elementary schools in the area to give speeches/talks during Career Week. Part of his job in the community was to work with the radio stations in the area. He had a special relationship with Minnesota Fats and Cher Best of iHeart Media, Inc. The Coca-Cola Bottling Co. sponsored a Black History Contest which culminated in February. The winner was invited to a weekend in Atlanta, GA where they toured numerous Black History sights in Atlanta. He enjoyed being at Trinity Manor Apartments when they had the Fall Festival and the Jeffery R. Thomas Toy Drive. In 2001, he was appointed to the Georgia Lottery Corporation Board of Directors and was sworn in by, then Governor Roy Barnes, where he served for 4 years. He also served as a Patient Advisor for the Patient-Family Centered Care for the Neuroscience Center at the Georgia Regions University, now Augusta University Health. After Roscoe retired, he volunteered at Golden Living Rehabilitation Center on Thursday. He organized a Males Group and they played Bingo and would even go on fishing trips. Roscoe made certain that each man had a cap and all supplies needed for fishing. As hard as he worked at his many endeavors, he worked just as hard on the golf course trying to perfect his golf game as well as in the kitchen perfecting his culinary skills. He claimed he was the Grill Master. He had many “Toys” on the deck, in the garage, and in the yard that he used to prepare his meats. He took great pains in making sure everything was cooked to perfection. He always had enough to share with friends and family. His niece, Tyron, who lives in Jacksonville loved his ribs and looked froward to having them every Thanksgiving. Even if she did not come for Thanksgiving Roscoe had to send some to her. He was happiest when he was planning his golf trip to Santee, South Carolina, or any other golf outing. They had so much fun that they increased the trips to two per year one in May and the other in October. These were weekends of golf, devotion and male bonding. Whatever Roscoe did he put his heart and soul in it to make certain it was correct. When Trinity Manor was sold and the Board of Directors was seeking a new direction, Roscoe worked tirelessly with the other board members to organize a 501c3. Whenever someone greeted Roscoe he would reply with his favorite comment, “I have no right to complain.” In addition to his parents Roscoe was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherbrina Simmons, a brother Connell Prince, and two sisters, Barbara Ann Puryear and Tammy Prince Simmons. Roscoe leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 46 years, Lucretia P. Brown; one son, Roscoe “Rocky” (Sharee) Brown, II; four brothers, Levi (Robbie) Golphin of Lithonia, Georgia, Victor (Mirion) Golphin of Hawkinsville, Georgia, Donnell (Theiran) Prince of Richmond, Indiana, and Charles (Annette) Scott of Augusta, Georgia; two sisters, Bernice Clark and Marie Merriweather of Augusta, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Ms. Mary B. Duboise and Rev. Margaret Parramore, both of Augusta, Georgia. Roscoe also leaves one granddaughter, Brianna Simmons; special nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He also leaves his four golfing buddies who played golf together on Saturday even getting memberships at the same golf club: Paul Henry, Cleveland Jones, Dr. George Nixon, and Dr. Vernon Spaulding.

Public viewing will be held Wednesday, December 30, 2020 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Bellevue Memorial Gardens, 4501 Wrightsboro Road, Grovetown, Georgia with Reverend Tommie L. Benjamin, eulogist. Social distancing will be observed and mask are required.

The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christian Youth Fellowship of Trinity CME Church, 2930 Glenn Hills Drive, Augusta, Georgia 30906 in memory of Mr. Roscoe Brown, Sr.

Mr.Roscoe Brown was a patient for many years. After my retirement from private practice, he and I remained friends.
