“What the world has lost, Heaven has found….”
Larry Lawrence Walker was born on December 24, 1942 in Manhattan, New York to the late Harry and late Anna Mae (Holman) Walker. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all who knew him. Larry was educated in the New York City public school system and remained there through adulthood where he met and married the love of his life, Gloria Hermetra Mitchell in 1962. To this union, they had one child, Jenell GiGi Walker. The family later moved to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. After many years, Larry relocated to Arizona where he worked until retirement for the City of Phoenix at the Sky Harbor Airport as an Electrical Facilities Maintenance Technician. It was there he met and remained in very close friendship with his buddies Pete Garcia (Lola), Richard Green and Mary Hawkins. Then in 1996, after hearing the news that his daughter and son-in-love would soon have his first grandchild, Larry retired and moved to Conyers, GA to assist them with the baby’s care. He made it known that “HIS” grandchildren would never have to attend daycare. Not only did Larry make sure they never saw the inside of a childcare facility, he loved and protected his family so much that he was their “personal chauffeur” until they learned to drive themselves. Granddad’s precious cargo (Gloria & Colby) “never” road a school bus! Larry was a dedicated granddad-caregiver until both his grandchildren entered college. Granddad resided in the Decatur, GA. area for over fifteen years where he was the emergency contact for many “just in case” situations for other families. He never said “no” to anyone for anything…and he had an enormous smile that lit up the entire room. Larry was kind, gentle, polite, and honest. Through the years, Larry Walker became “Grand-Dad” to many children and adults alike. He never met a stranger, loved to meet new people, explored new places around town, never passed up eating some “good” chicken wings and always enjoyed finding a “great deal”. Larry was a lunch partner to many; and his navy bean recipe, collard greens and ribs would make you “smack yo- mama”! He was an outstanding cook! Granddad was a Big Man with a BIG HEART. Larry loved, and was loved by so many!! On 12/25/2020 (Christmas morning), after having breakfast with his family, Granddad retreated to his bedroom where he received his Wings of Eternal Life. Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife, parents, grandparents and twelve siblings. He leaves to cherish his memories his only child, Jenell Gigi Walker Clark and son-in-love, Christopher Clark; 2 grandchildren, Gloria Lynn Clark (23) and Colby Walker Clark (21), and a host of family and friends.
