Helen Mitchener

Passed 01/01/2021

Helen Vance Mitchener, 91, formerly of Greensboro, NC, departed her earthly home Friday evening, January 1, 2021, after courageously living with Lewy Bodies Dementia for the last ten years.

Helen was a retired educator in the Guilford County School System where she began her career at Florence Elementary School in High Point, NC teaching art and elementary education. Helen also taught at Millis Road in Jamestown, NC, and Rankin Elementary in Greensboro, NC. She had a knack for making any subject matter enjoyable to learn using visual aids and developing lessons that spurred interaction from her students. There wasn’t a child Helen couldn’t reach or teach. She loved and nurtured her students as if they were her own children and expected nothing less than their best. She did not accept a ‘give up mentality’ from anyone and would often tell her students (and others), “you can do anything you set your mind to”.

Helen leaves to cherish her memories her daughter; LaTishia R. Lyles and grandson; Jacob A. Lyles of Durham, North Carolina; brothers-in-law, Clifton Mitchener (Frances) of Smithfield, North Carolina and Raymond Mitchener (Glena) of Greensboro, North Carolina, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and former students.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, 9131 Anson Way, Suite 206, Raleigh, NC 27615, or AuthoraCare Collective – Burlington, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

A public viewing will be held Friday, January 8, 2021, from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Cassie Coote-Brown Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery.
