Mr. Whitener was retired from Fiber Industries. He was a member of Ellis Chapel Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and as a member of the Hymn Choir. He loved to garden and enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Dodgers teams.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Lockhart Whitener; eight brothers, James Houge, Rev. Dan Houge and Willie, Dewitt, Joe, Johnnie, Lee Othis and Eugene Whitener; six sisters, Alice Worthy, Donnie Potlow, Creamer Hamrick, Rosie Nance, Veola Black and Ida McClain; a grandson and a brother-in-law, Bishop Eddie Lockhart.
He leaves to cherish his memory a son, Connington Whitener (Passion) of Kings Mountain, NC; a daughter, Venesia Epps of Shelby; one brother, C. L. Whitener (Roselle) of TX; seven grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, William Lockhart, Overseer Theodore Lockhart (Alzena) and Benjamin Lockhart (Henrean); eight sisters-in-law, Margaret Hames (Willie), Effie Mae Haynes, Erma Lockhart, Priscilla Lockhart, Deborah Lockhart, Leatha Lockhart, Barbara Roberts (Amos) and Mary Lockhart and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Whitener will be private. The service will be livestreamed on FaceBook starting at 1:15 PM on Saturday, January 23, 2021. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 1:30 PM on Saturday at Ellis Chapel Baptist Church. For those who will not be attending the reception of friends, he may be viewed at S. T. Enloe Memorial Chapel from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Saturday. Burial will take place at Ellis Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
