Odessa was the second oldest of three siblings, being the only girl. Odessa was married to the late Romie Laury and had one daughter, Patricia Ann Laury. Odessa and Patricia spent a lot of time together this would include Saturday shopping adventures, going to “Nellie’s hair salon, eating a good meal and enjoying each other conversation. Odessa was a great Mother and enjoyed being called “Mother Dear” by her only daughter, Patricia Ann. Odessa was baptized on April 6, 1969 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, until her death she continued to attend meetings with the Pine Grove Congregation. Odessa enjoyed spending a considerable amount of her time participating in the field ministry and often hosted bible studies. Odessa served Jehovah for many years and continued down to her passing.
Odessa was educated in the Valdosta City School System and graduated from Dasher High in 1948. Throughout Odessa’s life, she was a wonderful loving professional caregiver to many families. When Odessa realized that her Mother, Katherine needed care she left the city of Philadelphia moving back to her hometown, Valdosta, Georgia to care for her mother’s needs down to her passing. Even after Odessa’s death on Tuesday, January 26th, her family was contacted by the Georgia Medical Hospital requesting to speak to Odessa because a family needed a caregiver for their Aunt who would be released from the hospital soon. Even at the age of 89, families were still requesting Odessa to be the caregiver for their loved ones. Odessa brother James Edward Alexander states “My sister was a caregiver whose warm presence and energy comforted those who sought her service”.
Odessa leaves great memories for her family to cherish, her daughter, Patricia Ann Smith; grandchildren, Derek Smith, Tabitha Smith, Darnell Smith; great grandchildren, Kardin Strong, London Smith, Peyton Smith and Paige Smith; also a host of family and friends.
