Obituary For Ms. Lillie Powell

Lillie Powell entered into rest Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at her residence.

Born in 1932 as Lillie Bell Allen to Otis Lee Allen and Lula Bell Hayward Allen, Ms. Lillie Allen Powell would tell people of the world renowned fruitcake factory in her hometown of Claxton, Georgia. Having lost her only sibling at a young age, she was raised as an only child. A woman with a reputation for her sweet disposition, she also had a strong will when things did not suit her. This strong will held her in good stead as she left home to attend school at Savannah State College, where she met and married Sammie Powell. His military career moved them to Germany, followed by a one-year unaccompanied tour, where Lillie’s sweet nature coupled with that strong will helped her continue raising their beautiful and caring daughter, Deborah. Lillie was a big proponent of education, which she lived by example. She not only completed her undergraduate degree in school counseling, but obtained two Ph.Ds.: one as a Doctor of Divinity and one as a Doctor of Education. She also encouraged the growth of the local arts, regularly supporting the Augusta Mini Theater. Lillie Powell loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In addition to her actions, she demonstrated this devotion as a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church: first as a member of the Presbyterian Church in Savannah and then here in Augusta at Christ Presbyterian Church. Most importantly, Lillie Allen Powell was loved by most everyone who knew her. She cared about people and they cared about her. They knew about the daughter she loved dearly, they knew about her sweet doggie, and they knew about her neighbors and friends; in turn, she knew about them and their families. She didn’t simply attend church, gatherings, or appointments, she built relationships wherever she went. Her presence will be missed by her family, her friends, and her community. Our much loved Ms. Lillie is survived by her beloved daughter Deborah Powell Crone; a special niece, Diane Hayward (Reggie); a host of other relatives in her hometown; and many friends and neighbors mourning her passing. Due to the unusual circumstances of this time, no funeral services will be held. For those wishing to make a tangible expression of condolence, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to Christ Presbyterian Church, 1340 Laney Walker Blvd., Augusta, Georgia 30901; or to the Augusta Mini Theater, 2548 Deans Bridge Road, Augusta, Georgia 30906.

Dr. Lillie A. Powell was a great advocate for children and their families. She loved and cared for our Murphey Middle School students as if they were her own children, always professional and a delightful counselor for everyone. She loved her church and I know she will be dearly missed. We will always remember her pleasant attitude toward others and her prayers. May she rest in peace.
