Throughout the years, Doris never had a problem sharing with people she cared about. She usually cooked enough food on Sundays so that if there were any unexpected guests she would have plenty. Doris made her home a welcome haven for guests and always made everyone feel welcomed. She would always strike up conversations with people and talk with them like she had known them all her life.
Mrs. McCollum was affectionately known as Columbo because she always got to the bottom of the situation. She never held a grudge and was always forgiving. Doris instilled in her children to pray, just pray. Whenever someone would ask a question she didn’t want to answer she would just say, “Now” her most famous word. Doris had a beautiful smile and it got many compliments. Even during her illness, Mrs. McCollum was always asked for a smile from Nurses and many loved ones. She was employed with Butte Knits MFG until they closed. Doris also worked with T & S Manufacturing in Startex, SC and for Elaine Dillard in Lyman until 2009. Mrs. McCollum was not an active member of any church but attended meetings and studied with Jehovah’s Witnesses. She is survived by: her son, Samuel L. McCollum (Penny) of Greer, SC; her two daughters, Cynthia A. Irby of Boiling Springs, SC and Ellen L. Polite (Victor) of Dacula, GA; her granddaughters, Sierra and Brianna Irby; her three great-grandchildren, Haiden and Harlynn Martin and Titan Dewberry; her sisters, Mamie Gooden of Spartanburg. SC and Margaret Oakley (Charles) of Kansas City, MO; and a host of other relatives and friends. Doris was preceded in death by: her husband of thirty years, Melvin McCollum, Jr.; five brothers, Truman, Troy, Roy, Paul and Loe, Jr.; and two sisters, Shirley Howard and Ruth Ellen Thompson.
