Obituary For Deaconess Carolyn R. Trice-Walker

Soror Carolyn Rose Trice Walker was born December 9, 1936, to the late Reverend Norman A. and Susie Speed Trice. She became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on March 1, 2021, at Colonial Heights Care Center in Colonial Heights, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers, Marie, Alease, Nettie, James, Alonzo, and Walter.

Carolyn was educated in the Wake County School System and a graduate of Fuquay Consolidated High School. She was initiated into the Beta Rho Chapter in 1955 while attending Shaw University, where she received her BA degree in 1958. Later, she furthered her education at Winston Salem Teachers College, where she intermingled with some of the legendary greats, such as Earl “the Pearl” Monroe and Bighouse William Gaines, where she completed another degree in Elementary Education in 1961. She continued to further her studies at North Carolina Central University, where she received a Master’s Degree in Speech.

Her first posting was at Perry’s High School, 3rd grade class, Louisburg, North Carolina.

After marrying a military combat hero and relocating to Chesterfield County, Virginia, Carolyn began her professional career as a special education teacher in the public school system of Petersburg, Virginia, in 1971. She furthered her education at the University of Virginia and completed her Master’s Degree in Special Education at Virginia State University in 1983. She was appointed a Special Education Resource Coordinator in 1983. Not only was she an educator, but she was also active in many local and national organizations, including the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, Southern Poverty Law Center, ACLU, and the Democratic National Committee. Upon retirement, she continued to serve as a staunch member of the Delta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Soror Walker dedicated her life to working with children with disabilities.

Her spiritual journey began at the First Baptist Church in FuquayVarina, North Carolina. Carolyn and her husband drove from Virginia to Fuquay to attend church for 26 years; she was a devoted and dependable member. Carolyn was ordained as a deaconess in 1974 at Bethany Baptist Church by her father, the late N.A Trice. She later joined Tabernacle Baptist Church; she served diligently on thedeaconess board. I was shocked and deeply saddened yesterday to learn of the passing of my cousin, Deaconess Carolyn Trice Walker. She was highly motivated, very smart, funny, faithful, and generous. At our Dean, Green, Trice Family Reunions, I would seek her out and just listen to her talk. I felt honored to be in her presence, and I always learned something from her, a fellow educator. She consistently demonstrated her love for her family. I will miss her, but I know that we will meet again on "that other shore." Rest in power, my beloved cousin! Reatha M. Page

To the Walker and Trice Families: I came to know Carolyn through Rev. Harold F. Trice, Sr. while serving as the Min. of Music at UCMBC. Carolyn made me feel as if we had been family years. To know her was to love her and appreciate her intelligence, whit, and and comedy! She was always make us laugh, but was also very encouraging. No matter what event we had at UCMBC, Carolyn and Walker would come down as if the drive was only 30 minutes away. lol! Spiritually, financially, and supportively, Carolyn was there. What a lady!!! I will always remember her love for family and friends. If you wanted Carolyn to get upset, say something or do something to her Harold or Carl Trice. You had a battle on your hands. Please be encouraged by the memories shared. Love you guys!❤️❤️❤️ Rev. Steven Hargrove
