Sammie L. Holmes

Passed 02/17/2021

SAMMIE L. HOLMES was born on January 24, 1943 into the union of James Cooke and Nancy Manning in Dalton, GA. She was one of 17 children (sisters) Deborah, Betty, Rhonda, Cheryl, Sylvia, Anna Lee, Wanda, Sarah, Glenda, and Hazel, (brothers) Samuel, Jerry, James (Cookie), Raymond, Melvin, and was later raised by her Uncle Jack and Aunt Genny Lee Tasker. Sammie attended and graduated from Emery Street School in Dalton, GA which was the first Public School for blacks.

In 1961, Sammie migrated to Chicago, IL where she found and married the love of her life Boyce Holmes. Sammie and Boyce together raised 4 wonderful children Randall Tasker, Anthony Tasker Sr., Jerry Tasker and Stephanie Holmes-Williams.

Sammie furthered her education and obtained an Associate Degree at Chicago Loop College. While joyfully raising her children, she started working at the United States Postal Service (USPS) and retired after 33 years. While working at the USPS, she became known for her fabulous cakes. Upon retirement she enjoyed baking cakes for individuals in the community, friends, her Post Office family, as well as her own family. During retirement from the Post Office, Sammie became an advocate of breast cancer awareness and started working for Y-ME Breast Cancer Foundation and Stroger Breast Cancer Center.

Sammie loved her family and was affectionately known as “GG” to her great grandchildren. She always had a love for people, blessing all who came in contact with her. A smile, a kind word, anyway she could help, she did. However, she could also set you straight! Family and friends knew that anytime they came to “Hoxie”, there would be baked goods on the table. Even as her health declined, she was still in the kitchen preparing home cooked meals for her family.

Sammie received the calling and went to be with the Lord, on February 17, 2021.

Sammie was proceeded in death by her husband Boyce Holmes, Uncle Jack and Aunt Genny Lee Tasker; six siblings (brothers), James (Cookie), Raymond, Melvin, (sisters), Wanda, Sarah, Glenda and two grandchildren Alicia and Randall.

Sammie leaves loving memories to treasure with her four children; Randall (Charlene) Tasker, Anthony Tasker Sr., Jerry Tasker, and Stephanie Holmes-Williams; extended daughter Donna Powell; 20 grandchildren, Monae “KaBoobie”, Ebony “Ebbie”, La’Shae “Shae Shae Lafond”, Anthony Jr., Tanginia “Tang”, Alicia, Randall, Renita, Bonita, Tremell, Stacy, Je’Ree, LaTeesha, Kiera, Angel, Alex, Jordan “Jor”, Derrick, Torael and Ja’Liza; 42 great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; nine siblings; brothers, Samuel and Jerry; sisters, Deborah, Betty, Rhonda, Cheryl, Sylvia, Anna Lee, and Hazel (Ron); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
