Emma Topping Obituary

Mrs. Emma Leona Gibbs-Topping born December 24, 1929 in Oriental, North Carolina; to the late George Sylvester Gibbs and the late Martha keys Gibbs. She attended the Palmico County School System in Palmico County North Carolina. Emma was united in holy matrimony to the late Dalla Raymond Topping on March 4, 1947. Shortly there after they moved to New York City and started their family of 15 children. Emma Leona Topping departed this life on February 23, 2021 after a short stay in the hospital. She had a heart of gold, she never complained about anything. For years she used to cook and was famous for her cakes and Banana pudding. Although she stopped cooking it didn’t keep her big family away. She loved her family and everyone else too. Her house was your house. She welcomed everyone even if you were not blood related. Not only on weekends but any day. She enjoyed the company and all the noise that came with them. Mrs. Topping or Maw as she was known to everyone, she always had an infectious smile and a quiet spirit. You could never tell what was really on her mind, that’s how quiet she was. People have asked “have she ever raised her voice”. Over the last few years when you called her on the phone and asked how are you today?! She would say “All right so far” When you said I love you she would say “Love you too and start mumming. Maw liked music especially (usher) and the song aint no stopping us by McFadden & Whitehead. She liked the Golden Girls and the movie Mrs. Double fire and the old soap opera” All MY Children”. There’s so much that can be said about Maw since God blessed her with such a rich long life, unfortunately there’s no time to go on and on. We will all miss you Maw. Emma Leona Gibbs-Topping leaves to cherish her memory eleven of her fifteen: Kenneth, Melody, Ernestine, Cecelia, Leslie, Picola, Betty, Martha, Sylvester, June and Celena, One brother Alton Gibbs, one sister Glenda Hargett, four son-in-law: Roland, Bright, Benji & Douglas; one great son-in-law Bernard, two daughter-in-laws: Sarah & Shana, 40 grand chidren, 42 great-grand children 17 great-great grand-children and a host of nieces, nephews and neighbors.
