Obituary For Ryan Rossum

RYAN ROYELLE ROSSUM, affectionately known as “Ry”, “Ry Guy”, “Ry Ry”, “Ry Smoothe”, “Ryan Royelle”, “Uncle Ryan”, “Duck”, “Buck Jr” and as his mother would call him, “Smoothie Pants”, transitioned from this earthly life into eternal life on February 27th, 2021 at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. He was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Oscar Glenn Rossum, Sr. and Sharon Legotte Rossum. He was the third oldest of six children.

He received his formal education in the York City School District and was a graduate of William Penn Sr. High School Class of 2007. Some of Ryan’s highest achievements in High School included being inducted into the National Honors Society, graduating with Honors and being voted “Most Flirtatious” by his fellow classmates. He also was a recipient of the Dollars For Scholars Scholarship Program and a member of the William Penn Performing Arts Program. Inspired by his performing arts teacher and mentor, Calvin Weary, Ryan pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a filmmaker.

Ryan was also awarded the Keys To The City given by former Mayor John Brenner for winning ShowTime At The Apollo with his sisters.

After graduating from high school, he continued his post secondary education at York College School of Pennsylvania where he was a recipient of the YCCOSP Scholarship earning a full ride. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications.

Ryan began his entrepreneurial journey producing 2 full length movies; “Rays Intellect” and “Dead Queens”. Ryan’s drive and determination led him to relocate to Atlanta, Georgia where he resided for the next six years. He dove into his career fearlessly embarking in countless business ventures utilizing his skills including filmmaking, editing, video shooting, writing and directing. He worked alongside many successful individuals such as Derek Blanks, Polo Da Don, Terayle Hill, Gee Bryant and David Shands. Ryan did it all, from inspirational and comedic vlogs like “Kickz Are Everything” to business promos and short films including “A Reminder” featuring American Idol’s season 10 contestant, Ashton Jones. Ryan had a gift of details and took pride in surpassing the expectations of his clients.

He enjoyed anything in the field of arts with his creative eye and mind. Ryan enjoyed funny movies and shows such as Martin. He enjoyed writing scripts and giving the community an opportunity to take part in his creative projects. Ryan found that his mind was at its most creative when in a calm and relaxing atmosphere - Starbucks being one of his favorite places to sit and create.

Ryan loved spending quality time with his favorite people - his family. He enjoyed group FaceTime calls with all his siblings, nieces and nephews, where using funny filters to make each other laugh was the highlight of the conversations. Ryan enjoyed spending time in Philly with the love of his life, Lucille. He recently found a new love for cooking healthy food. If you never tasted his grilled salmon, you missed out! He enjoyed networking and connecting with like minded people.

His parents and grandparents taught him to love God. Ryan recently was on a spiritual journey where he ventured into learning more about the Gospel and experienced spiritual encounters in the past few months before gaining his wings to eternal life. One of the most significant experiences being Ryan’s dream, where Jesus confirmed his love and grace for his son. He was so amazed at the details and vividness of his dream that he called his Mom Mom (Myrtle Legotte) and shared his dream with her. After giving details of the dream, Ryan ended the conversation with these exact words, “Mom Mom in my dream I remember being attacked and I yelled, “Devil you cannot have me, I belong to Jesus.”

He was preceded in transitioning into eternal life, by his paternal grandfather, Lorenza Rossum, paternal grandmother, Albertha Scott Rossum and maternal grandfather, Leonard Legotte.

Ryan leaves to celebrate his life and to cherish precious memories of him, his mother, Sharon Legotte Rossum; his father, Oscar Rossum Sr.; his siblings, Ciara Darr (Matt), Carissa Cheshire (Xavier), Corrinne Rossum, Casey Rossum and Oscar Rossum Jr; his godbrother, Jyliek Edwards; his godchildren, Vashaad Andrews and Sha’Niyah Ballard; his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Legotte; his girlfriend of four years, Lucille Pann; his nieces and nephews, Ajani, Anaya, London, Xavier Jr, Dallas, Amalie, Oscar III, Lennox and Nova; his godmother, Yvonne Harris and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. To know Ryan was to know love, God and family. He will always be remembered for his infectious brace face smile, his ability to accept challenges and to live intentionally. Ryan’s energy lit up every room he encountered. He taught us that having an idea alone is simply just an idea, but an idea with action and tangible progress is living in your purpose. He believed in the talent and arts of the city of York and guided many people of all ages to step outside their comfort zone. Ryan’s legacy will shine through the work of his family and closest friends for his impact have inspired many. Heaven has gained an angel. If Ryan could speak to you today, he would say, “Life is like a camera; focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t turn out, just take another shot.”

His life will be celebrated on Friday, March 12 at The Appell Center For The Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York, with a Viewing from 8:00 until 10:30 a.m., the Funeral Worship Service to begin at 11:00 a.m. and burial in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
